I know $200 a day is expensive. My wife was just at Traders Joe's and ocean caught salmon was $11 a pound. The two fish together, gutted and gilled weighed 35 lbs. I have about 30 pounds of edible meat. That's over $300 worth of fresh fish. I know it doesn't always work out that way but it is a sure way to catch fish.
You might check out shore fishing for salmon out of Benicia. I have a friend who lives there and fishes for them starting any time now. There is a break water jetty they fish from and do quite well on certain tides.

I may try it next year. It does sound like it was worth it and Salmon that you caught most certainly tastes better than anything caught at the store.

Had it for dinner tonight and did it taste good. Nothing like fresh, never frozen, salmon. Got a smoker load in brine to be ready to go on early in the morning.

Nice catch WC, sometimes it pays to shell out the money up front. The payoff was worth it.

Do you know what type of gear they use? I've hooked a few big ones (probably 30+ pounds) up at Thermalito and I've never been able to bring one in. I don't usually fish with a heavy rod or reel and they just swim away with my set up.

Since it's all trolling on the ocean heavy gear is used because of the heavy released weights to get down deep enough. Not sure if you fish from shore or boat. Have you tried braid topped with 20 lb. mono leader? Think a medium wt. rod should handle the big ones.

Way to go, WC! I did a mooching charter with Cal Kellogg from the Fish Sniffer last year in July after season opener and had fun! It was my first time on a charter out past the Gate! Stay safe with those fires out your way!!!
