Dumb question on Lure rating

If my rod (Ugly stik elite medium 6ft) has a lure rating of 5/8oz, that's the total weight of my lure setup as well as weights/sinkers? Or could I get away with a sinker that's 5/8oz plus a light lure (or even hook and worm)? I'm finding it hard to understand how best to tailler the components of my setup to this lure rating. The rivers around my city have fast, strong currents so I'm feeling the highest weight allowed on my sinker will be helpful, but the last thing I want is a snapped line.

Total weight.

Ugly stick can take alot more abuse, but the newer ones have gone down hill imo.

My old one can chuck anything I'm able to throw with it. It absolutely will not break. (My dad bend the tip the the bottom when he showed it to me)

Edit: its really refering to casting. It'll be harder with more weight and may break a weaker rod.

Idk about that low weight but sputnik sinkers work great for me when I need more weight then practical but I use like 2-6 oz (saltwater)

The line won't snap bc of a the rod being rated lower though. More so the increased weight. (But the rod will come into play with how "effortlessly" you can cast, aka less strain)

Stronger line and it'll happen less.

I love using strong braided line bc its thinner and stronger than mono (both have ups and downs)

Edit 2: I usually have separate rods for lures and rigs (sinkers) they are often two completely different weigh classes for my needs.

But I do have a few "utility" ones.

If your aren't casting and retrieving the issue is minimized as you only have to make the casts a few times. If your careful you can get away with alot more weigh on some setups, but i wouldnt go too high with that one

Thanks for all the info. I have 8lb braided, guess I'll add some 1/2 or so sinkers with a slip float, I'm just going for panfish and maybe those on the bigger side for the moment so I can acquire some mojo XD

Get heavier test line, you'll be fine.
