I had a great day. Hit twelve yellowfin tuna. We got 6 in the boat and lost the others for a variety of reasons. The tuna were 40 to 60 pounds. We also got one small dorado that made for a wonderful main course for dinner last night.
The picture of me holding a tuna and the rod and reel is special to me. My father-in-law built the rod but never got the chance to fish with it. It is old school heavy; a 7’ SABRE blank with AFTCO fitments. I wanted to use it once in remembrance of him. He loved his family and he loved the USA.

Nice catch, I have beein down there and had similar results, it is such a treat to have A-day like that to make up for all the days of hard fishing with little results. Having your dad's rod on the trip is priceless, enjoy the meals on his behalf

Looks like a fun trip.
Thanks for the pictures and story of the rod.
Of all the dozen plus countries I have visited, Costa Rica is the best, imo. My sister attended University in San Jose in '71-'72 and my family had a "last big family vacation", spending nearly 6 weeks touring CR and Central America.... I have stories for days, of our adventures.
I found the people, the terrain, the jungle, both coasts, even the weather, to be most copacetic to my standards. You are to be envied... thanks for sharing.
PS.... although, as the cattle business is the family biz, and we have been priveleged to have great beef all of our lives, my Father and I agreed that a Chateaubriand we shared at the "Chalet Suisse", a restaurant just outside San Jose, was the finest cut of meat we had ever eaten......and that includes my Dad's Kobe beef experience in Japan, he claimed..... have never pre-judged a restaurant or its provenance since !

Yes RJ, we chased tuna all over the place. So much so we ran out of fuel about a mile from the marina. Fortunately they carried a small spare drum. This added to the adventure.

We will have to look the place up. Love a good steak. We have found the beef to be, in general, very good. Thanks!

Keep in mind, I was there in January 1972 ! Might not be "under the same management"...lol.
Loved the black sand and body-surfing at Puntarenas, spent a VERY interesting New Year's Eve in Puerto Limon. We stayed at a B&B up at Monteverde... extremely welcoming Amish (Mennonite ?) community.....great cheese, of course, and a memorable couple of days with biologists from Harvard, hiking and exploring, finding new botanical species, collecting butterflies.
Like I said, my favorite country, other than this one.
Beautiful fish. That would be my trip of a lifetime

Back in my bartending days I frequently served a slightly shady customer who told me why he was very fond of Costa Rica; no extradition treaty!

Beautiful fish Grip, and great photos. I miss canyon fishing for Yellowfin and Albacore. Don't know if the back,or the knees are up to it anymore. Had a friend, years ago, who used to go to CR for Sailfish once a year, said it was beautiful.
Good job.
Thanks for sharing.

I fought most of them out of the chair. This was a good physical test for me. I’m 70 and I had three stents in March and had to postpone this trip a couple of months. Frankly I was a little concerned about my strength but God in all of His goodness has restored me.
