Hello all you lure fisher persons. Hope you're safe and healthy.
Anyone know what this funny lookin' plug is? RJS probably knows it!
Yes, I am. That is a Bomber Water Dog in excellent condition. Just Sayin...RJS
I still have several of these. They accounted for lots of largemouth back
in the 60's when deep divers first came on the scene.
RJS nailed it. Water dog lure.
This was actually the second generation of deep diving lures by Bomber BAit co.
The original was a large Bomber 600 black lure that ran backwards like a crawdad. It was what got the business started during W W ii. They had a hard time finding Parts until after the war.
This lure was introduced in the late 1950s. I was the first person ever to catch anything on one. Have reported elsewhere we were trolling a prototype Waterdog in just primer paint to see how the new aluminum bill would wear. Old style bombers had a brass diving bill. The Waterdog needed a larger bill and brass would be too heavy so we were trolling with water dogs with aluminum bills and I caught Kentucky spotted bass of about 3 lbs.
Since I was using N old SHAKESPEARE direct drive reel the stike felled off line and creates a blister on my thumb that lSted for several years! Just Sayin...RJS
And the color is a “Christmas Tree”
Im learning--i thought it was a "hellbender"
RIVERBOTTOM; There was a competing lure company that sprung up in Sherman/Denison that copies every lure made by Bomber. I believe it was called Whopper Stopper. I think both companies were eventually purchased by a company in Hot Springs Arkansas. There very few of the old wood Bombers still manufactured today. Most of these are plastic lures and are made for the Arkansas company by a Mequiladora factrory in Mexico. I am not sure but believe Hellbender was one of their brands. Just Sayin...RJS
all i can really remember about those lures it took a wench truck to real them in. if i caught a bass o one i am not sure i cooed
have reeled it in.

Hey RJ I knew you would know it! You are a wealth of info on The Bomber Bait Co.
It is definitely a Bomber Waterdog in less common Christmas Tree color pattern as mention by another fisherman.
I would say you should write a book on the company but someone already has. Have you heard of "The Bomber Bait Company" by Jim Bourdon of NY? I haven't been able to find it and I think it is probably out-of-print. Carl Luckey mentions it in his book. Also here is what Russ Lewis wrote in his book "Modern Fishing Lure Collectibles, Vol. 2, 2003". Very interesting company!
