Sorry to say, the only 'chum' I've ever used was barfing over the
rail ! Get me out on rough water (especially in a small boat), and
I'll be 'chumming in no time !
Love to fish, and love the water; unfortunately, the feeling doesn't seem to be mutual !

We used to make it out of a mix of chicken pellets, minced up fish and added crushed shells if we had them, add other smelly stuff like garlic or curry, use only a small amount at a time to attract, not feed the fish
Big A hit the nail on the head. I had some clients that I was taking fishing and for some unknown reason, perhaps breakfast, one was quite ill and kept barfing over the side. Every time he did, within minutes, we would start catching trout like crazy. So when we'd have another lull, I would yell for him to upchuck again. Yes, it was cruel, but we caught fish. Just Sayin...RJS

Fishing for King Mackerel in tournaments we filled a gallon jug up with dog food and filled it with manhaden oil

What were those lyrics to that
tune ? - "You've got to be cruel
to be kind !" Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do to
get the job done; if ya gotta
barf to 'chum' for the boat,
then so be it ! Unfortunately, it's neither pleasant nor fun for the person afflicted with the 'mal-de-mer' !

You sound like my BIL. Owned about a dozen different boats, was the CG auxiliary commandant and got seasick if he looked at water. Oh, if you want to make your own chum take all the fish carcasses you can find throw in some old bait and run it thru a meat grinder. Be sure to wear rain gear.
yeah i used to have a grinder with a suction cup on bottom. i would mount on the gunnel of my 17 cape horn. i bottom fished 6-15 miles out in the gulf.when a ruby red lips or squirrel fish would come up id put him in the grinder and made fresh chum. worked well .

Can't chum in Wisconsin.
I believe that's true in many
states, while some may limit the type/quantity of chum allowed
for certain species ! Some states allow the use of corn as bait for
trout, with small quantities of it
allowed as chum ! I've read of some folks using cans of cheap, fish-flavored cat food as chum
to attract catfish ! I'm guessing
it all depends on species and
local statutes in freshwater;
not sure if it's even restricted
at all in the 'salt' !
I fresh water fish I use corn 49 cents per can. Carp are fun to catch and throw back
I grind up menhaden, freeze it and when ready to go I put it in a mesh bag hoping for bluefish. Not too many blues any more sadly. Used to go to the clam plant to get culls and would mix that with mussels from the sedges. The sanitation guys gladly would run over my chum to crush the shells. This was for winter flounder which we used to get starting mid-March. In the NY Bight winter flounder is only a memory.
Some states may forbid chumming, but they can't do a dang thing about it if you barf over the side!
True, that ! And as unpleasant
as it may be for the sufferer, it
is definitely an end-run around
the legalities without fear of
legal repercussions !
