Spray the infected areas with women's hair spray. The "chiggers" are tiny red mites (spiders) Spraying them with hair spray will cover them so they cannot breathe and kill them. The itching should stop immediately.

Sally wander no bite me is the best thing for chiggers. You can put it on before you go and you won’t get any of them on you. It also works great after you get bit to stop the itching. I use to get eat up by them but not anymore. It’s the best that I have found.

I found that bug spray before you go out is the best way to avoid getting chiggers

Okay, so I have this canoe upside down on the bank in some weeds by my dock I fish from regularly. Out there all day Saturday, beautiful day. Half way through I get a new chatterbait hung up on a log I usually bump over. I flip over the canoe, retrieve the lure and well I’m in the canoe and spend the second half of the day in the canoe. Again Beautiful. Caught and released a bunch of bluegill. Great. Then that night I am all bit up with chigger bites. Now if I could see them or new I was getting bit at the time I could have reduced the exposure. I was out there all day. Now I am suffering. I am not counting the bites suffice to say Jethro would have to take his shoes off. What do you others with these chiggers running and jumping around do to prevent this uncomfortable situation??

My brother-in-law in NC and his team (spcl forces) would use Skin So Soft before going out in the field; he said it worked. I thought about teasing them about it but decided against it - Ha. He has a limited sense of humor.

when I go out fishing and I am fishing from the bank you can tuck your pant legg down and pull your socks up and over your pants then spray your legs with some kind of bug repel spray then you will not be bothered with them. just use socks long enough to cover your pants thin boot socks work great.

fisher, that's what we used when I had my boat in the Hammonasset River.2 hours on either side of low tide, the no-see'ems,or knats would drive you insane. Unscented skin so soft was the GoToo for all the regulars. Worked better than deep woods off.

When i had to work on my boat in the marina dock I would used Skin so Soft. Kept the green head flies off. If it works on them it should keep everything away

Yeah FT, When I first moved into the marina a fishing buddy told me about it. I thought he was yanking my crank, or setting me up for some prank. I resisted for a couple weeks, using Off, Deep Woods Off, and another brand I don't remember. Finally tried it, Holy Crap,it works! Live and Learn.

I've had chigger bites all my life. In the late 1960's my dad was stationed in the Panama Canal zone. The kids and mother came to Georgia to see our kin and of course I fished the whole time there. I was covered in hundreds of chiggers. The next day I was back in Panama swimming in the ocean all day. That night most all of the hundreds of "red-bugs" aka chiggers, were dead! I again spent the next day on the beach and swimming in the ocean. By the end of the second day, all chiggers were dead, gone, no itching. It didn't take this 10yr old boy long to figure out why.
I have been covered in butter, painted from toes to nose in nail polish and treated with every drug for insect bites and itching OTC money can buy. Nothing worked 100%

So whats the answer to quickly killing chiggers and stopping the cycle of itch and scratch till you sting and bleed.....

Take a warm heavy salt water bath. Soak for about 20 minutes. Epsom salts works as well as table salts.
Oh, you could of course go to the beach and swim in the ocean for the day.

I'll leave you with this tidbit of knowledge. In Greece, in some dialects, August translate to Chigger, biting red bugs. August in the southern US is the peak of Chigger season.

Blue Skies Always,
Dave

Rubbing salt into the wound may be a remedy in this case. Lived in Greece for four years. Loved the Mediterranean.

Thanks

Yup on the DEET ! If you don't have any deet, WILD TURKEY 101. Drink the whole bottle the alchohol evaporating on yer skin keeps most away, the few that get thru, you won't mind !!!

Chiggerid is mostly anmonia. So ammonia dabbed on the bites should work. But try not to scratch the bite area. They seem to migrate up the legs when disturbed in that manner.
