Chiggers. Why in God name do they exist and what can be done about them

Okay, so I have this canoe upside down on the bank in some weeds by my dock I fish from regularly. Out there all day Saturday, beautiful day. Half way through I get a new chatterbait hung up on a log I usually bump over. I flip over the canoe, retrieve the lure and well I’m in the canoe and spend the second half of the day in the canoe. Again Beautiful. Caught and released a bunch of bluegill. Great. Then that night I am all bit up with chigger bites. Now if I could see them or new I was getting bit at the time I could have reduced the exposure. I was out there all day. Now I am suffering. I am not counting the bites suffice to say Jethro would have to take his shoes off. What do you others with these chiggers running and jumping around do to prevent this uncomfortable situation??

Use bug spray. Re-apply after each “dip” in the lake! 🤣 LOL
The itch is larva moving about. There are several cures. The most common is clear nail polish. My dad settled in Mo. years ago and it was chiggers that drove him out. Hope you figure this out. Hope you share the answer with the rest of us.

Calamine lotion is what I use. But I think only time heals
When I was in the army in Virginia, I was chosen to “guard” our bivouac camp. I was surprised how much the country looked like Ct where I was from. So being the only one there I payed in the grass. That night I discovered how different the two states were. I had chigger bites all over me. I asked the Sargent what to do and he gave me Campho Phenique. (Camphor oil) which gave me immediate relief.

I am getting some relief from Chigger Rid. Just a lot of bites. Combination of camphor and fingernail polish. Now how to avoid the rinse and repeat?
I hear that spraying your Shoes and ankles with WD40 will prevent chiggers from reaching prime part! Just Sayin...RJS

When me and my dad use to go hunting we wore panty hose to keep chiggers and ticks off are lower half. Shouldn't get chiggers on upper half unless you roll in grass.
17 and my girlfriend and I spent an evening "lying" in the grass in Indiana. She ended up with chiggers on her legs and backside. They must have found her so delicious that they left me entirely alone. I'd second that. We never did that again. Not there anyway.
I have no idea how to prevent them chewing on you or how to get rid of em. Little Red Devils get under your hide and itch like the dickens. We just put up with em for a couple days.
Flea collars on ankles worked in Texas in army days
I went to Texas years ago to bow hunt hogs. I didn't know about chiggers and because of a hangover, I took a nap in the long grass. And I got ate up, and had chigger bites all over my body.
When hunting, I use permanone , sometimes called permatrin on my clothes. It’s an insecticide that goes on your clothes, (not your skin) it dries odorless in an hour. Lasts for a couple weeks. On your skin, just use deet.
Permatrin will keep ticks off of you as well.
Use Cutters or Repel the 30% Deet on your socks and the bottoms of your pants before putting them on. It is in the cloth. Doesn't matter if it gets wet or not it's in the cloth. Brother and I did that in the mountains of Arizona hiking and going off trail. No Ticks, no chiggers. Cutters is 28% Deet and the Repel can both be gotten at Walmart. Off and 6-12 doesn't do as good. Less Deet.
WD-40 on the skin is NOT really good for you. 30 seconds later you can taste it! it goes through your blood stream! I use it to kill Yellow Jackets and spray down the nsts with it. Nothing comes out alive from the nest. Think about that.
AutoDigger: Yes, I am aware of WD40's adsorption rate and getting the taste. What i was recommending was on your shoes or boots. That way they don't get access. However, if you lie down in the grass, look out! I expect something with a Deet formula would be safer and more effective. Just Sayin...RJS

NP I use Cutters @ 28% Deet. Saw Repel at Walmart at 30% Deet lately. Boots and shoes should be Np for the WD-40. Spraying the socks and pant's bottoms stops the ticks and chiggers real good.
