Free range cow at 8000 feet in the Sierras above Markleeville California. She was just standing along side the road and wanted us to stop and say howdy.
Highland Lake at 8700 feet. The brookies were either not home or not receiving guests.
North Fork of the Stanislaus - if you look closely you can see the trout holding in the water. I saw at least a half dozen swimming around in there.
Lake Alpine in Alpine County California at 7300 feet.
We were not prepared for what we found at Lake Alpine and the Stanislaus. I don't usually go up there this time of year so was not ready for the hordes of starving mosquitos. Miserable Maybe twenty years ago I could have put up with that, but not at this stage in my life. 8700 feet was another matter all together. No bugs. But no fish biting either.

Despite the mosquitos it looks like a lovely place. At least you got to see fish.

Beautiful pictures there, Spirit. Thanks for sharing!
Nice pic looks like a wonderful spot to camp
Looks beautiful Spirit, sorry the fish didn't cooperate
Thanks for the pics Spirit. Beautiful looking country, and from the sounds of it the fish probably had so many mosquito snacks they weren’t hungry.

Hi Mr. Spiritof27,
Yes, that is a lovely place, but mosquitos. They find me walking out to the mail box. Well, you have three girls that think it's beautiful. That's probably a first on F.S. :)

I'm sure somone is looking for that cow. That's a nice baldy cow, I can't see someone letting it go.
There were two of them right there on the side of the road. They're free range cattle, they roam around up there. When they want to gather them up I guess they have a round up of some sort, there quite a few places up there where you see loading ramps with holding pens and corrals with horses. Not sure how that all works, but it's got to be quite an operation. An old friend of mine who was a farrier used to go on and tell me about those roundups. As he got older he would stay in camp and do the cooking. Said they ran out of meat one time and so he shot and butchered one of there burros. Told the 'boys that a deer had wandered into camp and he'd shot it. They all said that was some of the best chili they'd ever had.
Gives new meaning to burrito’s.

Maybe that is how “Jack in the Box” got started.....
Just sayin’ ....... 🤣
Hey Spirit did you try any flies? I've fished in that area years ago and dry flies were the ticket especially small-sized ant patterns and of course the infallible mosquito fly. :)
Ol' Bill, the friend I's talking about, used to have a big party/reunion at his little ranch in Ramona CA right around this time of year, generally right before the 4th of July. He would slaughter a hog and bury half of it in a pit with hot coals. He would wrap it in burlap. Serve that pig up with pintos on a tortilla with whatever else on it. He didn't call those burritos, they were burros. He was a good man. I miss him.

If we all really knew, we would never eat fast food again.
