in norCal (Santa Cruz area) flounder can be caught on cream colored plastic worms on a jig head cast into the swirl behind the breaking waves. from pier or jetty or shore if you can cast far enough. might have to wade into the water to get the lure over the breaking waves and into the back swirl. also can catch perch that way, but better luck with live sand crabs.

i have never had much luck pier fishing for Fluke in Long Island Sound on the CT side. We don't have that many fishing piers in any event and most of those are at mouths of rivers where you are more likely to find stripers, albeit probably schoolies and not legal to keep but still fun to catch. I have better fishing fluke from the surf either from beaches or Jettys. Squid works well as a live bait and 3/4 oz bucktail with either quid or Berkley Gulp work really well. You don't need very heavy equipment. A 7 or 8 foot , 15 or 20 lb Braid, a 4000 series reel will do it. If you do go pier or jetty fishing, you will need a long landing net, preferably with a telescoping handle. I don't recommend a gaff unless you intend to keep the fish. Gaff = Mortality .With current restrictions on strippers and fluke, its hard to know when its in the water whether it is a keeper. On the shore of CT it is not likely large enough to keep. I assume any fish I catch these days will likely have to back, so I land it so I can safely release it. When you get keeper, no harm done.]

Ditto on any book or video by John Skinner.

1/0 live bait hook 3-4 feet In front of a 3/4 oz rubber core sinker. Hook a live anchovy. Cast it a little away from pier posts and let sink. Good rig for flounder and halibut.

In Myrtle Beach this time of the year bluefish, sea trout, pompano and croakers can be caught. For some reason southern fish prefer shrimp with squid running second.
Sharks in the winter from the pier in the state park across from the airport were always partial to chicken chunks.
