Took some looking but I found them near shore. Merganser is big at adopting another mother ducks brood, Usually around 10 ducklings so the other mother will lay another clutch of eggs. I have've commonly seen an individual mother looking out for as many as 50 babies, and sometimes as many as 80. It's a real treat watching them feed along the shore. They literally run on top of the water, driving small minnows and then if as on cue, the all dive in to gobble up the fish.
I saw a merganser with a baby tucked under its wing on the water, its little head just sticking out. I had never seen that before.
