Hello, I’ve haven’t been on this site in a while, but I really need help with this problem. I recently bought some penn saltwater reels and one of them is jamming up. I did not drop it in saltwater, or any other large problems. I wash them very, very well. Emphasis on well. I spend a long time with each one carefully washing them out with freshwater. I make sure that the water really gets in there. Please help if you have info on this problem

Does the possibility exist, that you washed them so well, that they need a lube-job?

Only help I can give you with out seeing it is to take it to your local tackle shop. Most have some one to repair them. Hope that helps. Cheaper then buying a new one. Good luck.

It does need to be taken to a shop. You may have a gear problem. What Model #/name is the reel?

Dry bushing... corroded bushing or bearing damaged gear. Sand could of done it. I only rinse reels off with tap water if been in salt especially if got salt water slashed on it. Rain is good it washes salt off automatically.

Loosen the nut opposite sides of drag etc. it’s not for anything except spool wiggling. Other brands use the nut in same location for tension adjustment. Penn doe NOT

This is likely the cause of the problem; never force water into the workings of any reel.

Hey banks i come to you with what i ran into. I like you washed down rather strongly with the hose after each outing and my 1 month old penn was binding up and felt like it was missing a gear. Sure enough opened it up, cleaned and greased and now a light rinse after the outing and have yet to have a bind.

When cleaning there was water inside causing just enough rust that i could feel the reeling difference. Don't know if the factory didn't have enough grease in it from the get go or not, but there was enough water in there to cause the rust.

So like others have said, ease up on the cleaning.

Ok thanks for all the information. I’m going to try each of these and see if they work

Good luck. There is so called reel grease that you can replace the existing with or i used marine grease since that is what i do my wheel bearings on the trailer with.

Actually it is not for wiggle, it is for the casting drag. If you loosen it too much then the spool will wiggle. You loosen it just enough that the reel casts without much backlash. Almost like the braking system that they do now.

Not to try and be second-guessing &/or argumentative; but, I'm pretty sure I'd ✓ / the Google, 2 find out the "Manufacturer's Recommended" lubricant. Some "want" lithium-grease. That, y maybe a wee drop of "3 in 1 Oil", or some Hoppe's, here y there, where it looks like it'd make sense.

That is a good idea Able, however i checked with my bait shop owner and he said use it because it is a water proofing grease. Oil was out of the question that just a temp fix and grease was already in my reels.

Penn makes a "kit" with both the Oil and Grease. I got it at Walmart years back. Works on all my reels, Penn or Spinning reels for lubing them. Not sure I would use Hobbs on a reel, thought that was just for guns. The Penn Grease seems to work better than the Lithium grease I use to use years back. Doesn't harden up over the years.
