What kinda fish is this. Have you ever caught one. It looks like it would pull hard. Wonder what it took to make a fish like this. Is it good to eat. What kinda lures or bait will they bite.

Hybrid Striped Bass, also know as a “Wiper” (long “i” sound).

I’m guessing it is a Wiper as well...a cross between a Striper and a White Bass. We have tons of White Bass here and when the “run” is on, they are a blast to catch. A big one gets over 3#. Ours like minnows and Shad type baits and evening black and white Mepps spinners. I would imagine the Wipers eat the same way, but get considerably larger due to the Striper genes.

Wiper

Caught several while fishing for catfish useing chicken livers.

Also caught them trolling a silver spoon.

They do fight good, and if you don't have your drag set they will break your line.

They don't nibble they take it and run.

Love catching these wippers. Years ago they planted them in Willard Bay in Northern Utah. Then they planted Gizzard Shad for them and the walleye to eat. They are in fact, how I got my name fast_randy. Because I used to troll 5 and 6 mph for them with rattle traps that they started calling me fastrandy.

We troll 1 OZ rattle traps also at 5mph for our stripers here on the Petaluma and Napa rivers. Might even go to the Napa tomorrow. The wind is suppose to be blowin to hard to go to Tomales Bay or the Petaluma river. The halibut have been on a really good bite at Tomales but we haven't been able to get out there yet.

You guys are all wrong. It was late and my hands were shaking. I couldn't hold the brush steady when I was painting on those lines just before I let her go. I'll rest up and paint some more lines tomorrow, and I promise to do a straighter line then. White bass striper hybrid. Are all you guys nutty??? The fins would get in the way.

Definitely a wiper but some experts say that some stripers have broken lines also. They are very common in southern lakes where the warmer water prevents stripers from surviving. In these cases the wipers are a stocked fish, they love live bait but will eat almost anything. When they strike they normally head down and sideways and travel in smaller schools than the striper.

Looks like a "wiper". A cross bred fish between a striped bass and a white bass. They have been stocked in many lakes due to their survivability and sport. My dad and I used to catch them in Kentucky Lake, Panther Creek arm. They bit on live minnows and lures such as spinners and spoons. They fought very well similar to small stripers and very good eating with firm white meat.
