Definitely had a long nose and sharp teeth. Sorry about using your (who knows) line!. You're probably a virtual encyclopedia by now like me. Anything I don't know I got to find out the answer.

Alligator gar has a wider snout Full of teeth a long nose or spotted gar has a long narrower snout full or needle like teeth. There is a salt water version called a needle fish.

I agree with mike on this one. Alligator gar have a much wider snout. That gar would have been easy to catch on a piece of frayed nylon rope. Good luck & tight lines.

I'm only familiar with Alligator Gars. So WV Mike may be right. It could be a Long Nose Gar. And I believe Alligator Gar are found mostly in salt and brackish water.
