Hula Popper. I agree, a great tried and true lure. Hooked up many a large mouth with those. One of the first hard baits I ever bought. Still have one in the fresh water box, but haven't used it in a while. I've been favoring floating Rapala's and Rooster Tails lately. I'll have to break it out and give it a try on the Florida hogs.

Hula Popper, one of my all time favorites. Caught hundreds of Largemouth, some Smallmouth and Pickerel on them over the years. If you're bank fishing, you have to try one, during the summer. The last hour of daylight, cast it out,let it sit until the ripples are gone,1or2 quick pops, let it sit, repeat, usually don't get to a third time.KERSPLASH!!! I call that last hour the Witching Hour. 50 years of memories doing just that.

Fred are you sure you’re not in South Carolina, that’s the same way I learned, those first and last hours of the day are the best for top water 👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻Tom

A little story.about 10 years ago I convinced 2 riding buddies to fish this small pond/lake near one of their homes. I hadn't fished there in 25 years. It was a hot summer day when the 3 of us launched Glen's canoe. It was a very slow afternoon with only a few panfish to show for our efforts. They kept saying "There's no bass in here anymore " and I kept saying : be patient, the Witching Hour is coming! At about 7pm the sun just went down behind the trees on the west side of the lake. I told Glen to pull into a cove we fished earlier. I said "Its Time " and threw out a Coachdog colored Hula Popper, while the 2 of them just sat there. 2pops,wait,2more pops...BOOOOOOM A. 3pound Largemouth smashed that thing and went straight up in the air about 3 ft high. It scared the crap outta both of them, and as I fought that one they were fumbling around trying to find topwater lures in their messy tackle boxes. I caught 1 more smaller one and Glen got one 1.5 pounder, and Joe got a 2lb Pickerel. By 8pm the bite slowed down, and we had to be off the water by dark. To this day I still call that the Witching Hour. As soon as the sun is out of sight.

Great story Fred and a great memory, be safe and come on down to South Carolina where the weather is a little warmer and taxes are much lower and some of us still wave as we pass (that is if you can see in the car windows) Tom🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎣

Yeah Tom that was my plan for this year, come down for a week and get the lay of the land. Visit some friends and check out the Real estate situation. Unfortunately due to this 10 week furlough I've been on, I will be taking less time of during the rest of this year. I really didn't want to do it in the winter, but I might. We'll see how the rest of this year goes. Sooner or later I'll be heading your way, that's a promise.

Definitely a Hula Popper by Fred Arbogast. He took a trip to Hawaii and was influence by the hula girls and added rubber skirts to many of his lures and named them after his visions of Hawaii, for example the Hawaiian Wiggler.
