I went fishing in Lake Juliette just outside Juliette, Georgia. Middle Georgia area. Juliette is where they filmed "Fried Green Tomatoes". The lake is an impoundment on Rum Creek and acts as a reservoir for Ga. Power's Plant Scherer power plant. The water is very clear compared to other lakes in the area. It's run by the Ga Dept. of Natural Resources.

Anyway, I caught a bass that looked like a largemouth but the colors were darker. The green on the back and the continuous black line along the lateral line were darker than the normal bass I usually catch there . The real strange thing was that it had red eyes. First bass I ever caught with red eyes and I've been bass fishing a long time. It wasn't a Rock Bass. Wrong shape. Any ideas?

I'n afraid that I can't manage to take a pic of a fish. Trying to fumble with the phone with hand while holding the fish with the other would end with the fish on the deck while me and phone went into the lake.

Ive noticed a few largemouth bass we catch on the Susquehanna River here in maryland have had red eyes. I asked a game warden about it and he said and I quote " they are rock bass also known as red eye bass".

If he'd been drinking Jack I'd threw back then followed him in. LOL! It wasn't a rock bass. I looked that up and it didn't look anything like a rock bass. It looked like a LM but the colors were darker and the eyes red.

Wish I could see the markings of the fish. I caught a few out of a farmer's pond and some were really dark and some were almost white. Large mouth that is.

It's either a smallmouth or a spotted bass. To identify a spot, Next time look at the dorsal fin. Front and back dorsals will be connected with a slight depression between. Largemouth have a distinct separation/ deep separation. Also, a spot will have darker dashed spots along the lateral and what look like tiger stripes on its head and a smaller mouth than a LM.

The colors on the fish looked like the colors a taxidermist paints on a mounted fish. The bass that come out of this lake are a bit darker than those of other lakes in the area. I contribute this to the clear water. All the other lakes in this area are stained to muddy.

One peculiarity about this lake is since it's fed by a small creek the lake level will drop when we don't get a lot of rain. In order to maintain a full pool level they pump water in from the Ocmulgee River that runs past Juliette. I guess it's possible that the fish might have gotten in the lake through this method but I don't know if it could survive coming through the pumps.

The dark area along the lateral was solid, not broken anywhere. Just a jagged solid dark line. Thats what got me looking, the darkness of this line. The fish was small weighing about a pound maybe. I release all the fish I catch.

We have spotted bass in California and most of them have red eyes. I've read that they can cross-breed with small mouths. Not sure what one of those would look like.

Sounds like a juvenile spotted or Kentucky bass. Did it have a tongue patch?
