I've seen em pick up some pretty big fish. I've also seen an osprey take a fish away from one. If birds were dogs, the osprey would be a terrier.

I actually saw the opposite. Was out on a camping trip, at a mountain lake (Hyatt) near here, making a few last casts before dusk. Heard the screams of osprey from way up high...two obviously young ones, just circling above, kinda erratically. Suddenly right in front of me is the splash of "Momma" scooping up a good-sized trout....oh, the kids are cheering on Mom...or so I thought.....but wait...

If you have witnessed an osprey take a fish, you have seen that move they make after taking a couple of flaps, to the air, to re-align the fish to make it more aerodynamic to fly off with the fish. Well, just timed perfectly as the osprey was loosening its talons to re-grip....BOOM... EAGLE BOMB !!! Momma loses her grip, dumped back in the water, on her back, no less !...... Eagle reaches out like a major league outfielder and back-hand grabs the fish, flies across the lake !! This eagle was what the kids were screaming about ! Mom flapped her way airborne again and joined up with her kids to chase that eagle, I'm sure to no avail. They flew out of sight, and I just headed back to the campsite...... nothing was gonna top that.

Well that’s sure one heck of an adventure. I’ve seen some pretty darn cool things with these birds but that tops em all.

During the early 1950s We used " bait casting reels and rods, ". They worked off ashore from a pier or a Boat. It was a rare occasion when We fished from a Boat. We discovered the " Monti Swiss Lure. A short time later We purchased a Arex Reel. It had a talk bail. We were hard on it. Jumping from rock to rock and smacking the reel on the rocks.

For some reason the Monti Swiss would drive the Rainbows mad. One day they disappeared off the market. I'll search on eBay almost always not finding any. The closet lure today to the Monti Swiss is the " EGB ". Talk about expensive !

Best of luck this season to all.
