When to use snells

Hey everyone,

I was given a pack of snells and I'm unsure when to use them and when to not, or if it's just preference. I'm looking at panfishing and confused about what is a good beginner set-up.

Plus can someone give me a good test line and hook size for panfish?

They are great for panfish because the snells are longer so you have less chances of getting hook in the gut.

They also hold worms better.

So you'd recommend using them instead of just a hook on the end of the line?

I only use them for Panfishing, cause I hate when the swallowed the other hooks and gets in the gut. Also snells are good to keep live worms in place.

Isn't a snelled hook just the knot to hold the hook in place?

To me, a snelled hook = I (or the manufacturer) tied ~ 6-8 " of 10lb. (Or so) test mono to the hook, with a small loop at the North end of it. The loop I attach to a snap-swivel. I usually keep 6 or 12 snelled hooks in my tackle box.
This makes for a "quick and easy" change up, between using a plug or lure of some sort, to just a hook/ live bait (OR dead bait... depends on what you're hoping to catch.)

#6 or #8 hooks for pan fish, Bluegills ect. If casting and you need weight, use a small /floatbobber with the hook about 4-6 inches below the bottom of the bobier.

I make my own snells, typically with 6-8lb mono to a size 8 bait keeper hook. I leave about 12-14 inches of line and put a small split shot on the line so it is ready to go.
