Remember this question for the future reference. One day you will sit back and say"what was I thinking" and you will laugh and cry at the same time. If I put my two cents in right now it would cost you more than you want to spend. 🤣😂😱

Most of the lures on the shelves are there to catch fisherman not fish. That being said I have a closet full of lures some dating back to the late 1800s that still catch fish. Between my wife and I we have almost 30 rod and reels. I will most likely by a couple more this year. By the end of the season We will have given away between 10 and 20 of them to local kids. You can never have too much fishing and hunting gear.

Oh MAN!! I think I’m over then. I’ve got over 30 rods and reels and my wife don’t even fish. She does but, like, once a year and she has one rod/reel combo. I’ve got 8 big game set ups and I’m 400 miles from the nearest fish over 100 pounds. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️. My boys bought the, for me when I was sturgeon fishing a lot and they want me to hang on to them so we can go halibut fishing. The nearest halibut is 650 miles from Riggins Idaho. 🥴

Gonna have to agree with the comments made above that question what constitutes "too much". I got quite the chuckle about those who "have it dialed in" by having "A bag for each type of fishing".... I try to keep it to a "reasonable" number of bags.
I got a full-on belly-laugh from the guy who wants "everything in one box"..... for me, that ship sailed before I graduated from high school in 1971...and just keeps chugging.
I honestly don't know how many rods I own, (yes I have four double-sided racks, full, but then there's the ones in the lake boat, and the Forester, and truck, and the drift boat, and that bunch over there, that need going over and cleaned.....)and don't care to take inventory, unless directed to, by my insurance guy or some other entities (property tax ?).
Yes, I have rigs that have not been used for a season or two..... they're not going "to spoil".... most were not "brand new" to me to begin with, as I acquired them from CL, pawn shops, yard and estate sales. I usually give at least half a dozen rigs away each year, to kids or friends in need .... the look on their face when I say "just hang on to that for me 'til next time, okay ?" is all I need to be "paid". And I hit the yard sales for more !
I am pretty sure I feel the same way about fishing gear as I do about woodworking tools...Can you really own TOO many clamps? ...a resounding NO,...no you cannot. And it would, IMHO, suck to find out !

Hoss: Everybody has too much tackle. That's what keeps tackle shops in business. My suggestion, possibly contrary to others is to go slow. If you have not been fishing already, begin by researching your area, the most plentiful fish there, and how they are caught. You can do this on YouTube.

Yes, you can ask questions of friends or fishermen you encounter, but take everything with a grain of salt. Regardless of whether you have a meager budget or millions, you will accumulate excess amounts over time. When actually you will only use a small portion of it. The fish you are trying to catch don't care! They are going to eat when they are hungry regardless. So if you are there, present something that remotely looks like food, you will catch fish!

Good luck, welcome to the forum, post some pictures! Just Sayin...RJS

I decided to inventory my fishing gear. After counting 21 spinning and bait rods and 6 fly rods on my office, and on the way to my garage to count my surf and ocean rods, reels and tackle boxes, I realized I already knew how much gear I had. Almost enough.

From someone who has way to much stuff. The way I stopped myself from buying things I really don't need. NEVER buy anything unless you have a specific purpose, application, and/or situation for it's use.
Remember lure makes do not paint lures to catch fish, just fishermen.

WHAT??? I ain’t doin that. If tackle shops quit catching fishermen we won’t have any tackle shops. Then where do I go for coffee and the “truth”? 😂🥴

As someone who wants to expand his interest in recreational fishing as a pastime, and a lifelong hobby & recreational activity I am in need of advice of how to avoid having too much equipment that you don't use it.

I understand that a variety of equipment is needed for fishing besides the fishing rod, lures & bait. You need a wide variety of various lures to attract certain fish, additional fishing line, pliers for cutting line, pliers for getting a hook out of your catches mouth if its stuck etc.

I just don't want to get to the point of having so much I end up not using all of the equipment I buy. I want to keep everything in one tackle box (I like the look of those Plano made ones) have have a fishing rod for light, medium, heavy and sea fishing (the long rotes you stick on the beach and wait for a catch), and a fly fishing rod. I want to make sure I have a use for each and use each rod ocaccsionally.

What do you think and what would your advice be?

As someone who wants to expand his interest in rec... (show quote)

Start off by going fishing with what you think you will use. When you get home, restock by getting rid of everything you didn't use and adding everything you needed but didn't have with you. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hyprid, advice is not gonna help, close your eyes and look around this forum. 1 thing leads to another, example, before you know it you’ll have a nameless boat powered by a chainsaw. That’s just how we are.

I try every think time allows without a bite. Chuck catches a bass on a flicker shad, then another, then another. I try three or four near identical lures with no results. I borrow a flicker shad and boom. I am catching fish. Where do I go as soon as we hit shore? The tackle shop of course. I need to add a new lure to my 50 pound fresh water boat box. Next day nothing on the shad, I try a cast master 1/8 oz. and nothing. Then a 1/4 oz. and boom. Where does Chuck go when we hit shore? LOL. You will catch more fish if you can say "I am glad I brought" rather than "I wish I had brought", or "crap, I forgot" That being said, when I go to certain lakes all I bring is my fly rod, fly box, split, shot, leader, multi tool and stringer. "Oh crap! I forgot my net"

thats a super hard question one thing try to limit yourself to lures over the years that catch fish constantly topwater mid-level bottom deepwater well here goes two top water, two middle depths, two bottom lures then you have to buy two of everything for all the types of fish you want to try to catch, just remember some fishing tackle catch more fishermen then catch fish,, a good Plano tackle box 5 drawers with spinnerbait tray on top will cover a lot of your needs. also a mid-size canvas bah for your plastic frogs worms jerkbaits slinkos with worm hooks #2 #3 #4 size ,hope that helps you good luck, all else fails go to a plastic or use a real worm
