I have been reading this forum for a while but can't remember if I introduced myself. I am a semi geezer lady living just east of Tampa in a town called Thonotosassa. I have always loved to fish but am not very good at it but am keen to learn more. And now they have closed down the parks where I usually went fishing ( but not catching except for one fat catfish from the Hillsborough River). If anyone in the area is looking for an occasional fishing buddy let me know. I don't have a boat so have just been fishing from banks and docks....except in alligator mating season.😜
I have been reading this forum for a while but can... (show quote)

Welcome Deb, lots of folks with good info here. Hope you get the chance to fish, soon.

Thanks. So do I! I haven't tried fishing off the bridges yet but I see a lot of people doing that since they can't close the bridges so I might try that. I hope I can pull a fish up ( if I can catch one) before it drops off the hook. Have no idea what kind of bait or lure to use but I can ask ( if they will share their secrets).

Well, if you can sort through all the BS around here, I would just about guarantee you’ll double that catch rate 😜
I might suggest you get a long handled landing net to help get your catch up onto the bridge as reeling a fish in the air can’t be good for your equipment. Just be careful not to whack someone in the head with it.
It also may help to just go watch the current fishermen (I guess I should say people, sorry) to observe what they are catching and how they are doing it. Those who fish are usually friendly and helpful as there can be a lot of idle time between bites to solve all the world’s problems. Just honor the social distancing guidelines 😉
Good luck.

I've thought about a net but how long would it need to be? Those bridges aren't that low. Do the handles collapse? Would they fit in a car without being in danger of whacking other cars driving down the road?
And no need to apologize about " fishermen". I am not thin skinned nor PC. 😉

I would suggest it should be able to reach about a foot into the water, or find a shorter bridge 😉
Back in the day some nets were extendable, but let me see what I can find as we don’t want to cause any accidents.

There are extendable nets up to about 8’, or lower able nets via rope with a 3 point connection, however, I would suggest you don’t try this alone. I have seen the rope version used on the bridge to St. George Island with success, but there were 2 people involved. Good luck with whichever you choose.

Cherry Loc: Orlando-Lake County, FL Area

Hi Deb I'm from Orlando - I travel to lake county a lot (Mt Dora, Eustis) to fish. Not all parks are closed. In Orange County fishing is an exception to the quarantine. I'm sure if you googled/called or even drove around your area a bit you'd find a couple hidden gems in Plant City, Riverview, Clearwater, St. Pete or even Tarpon Springs.

Speaking of nets, hopeing to need one, bought a new net, unboxed it and went to the lake nearest my home. Didn’t need it. Few days later went back to said lake with my new net and fished till I tired. At the ramp used the net to keep away from it and to help my balance, don’t drink either, laid the net on the ramp as I loaded and secured a fishless boat and proceeded home. Next afternoon I noticed and realized that I left the net on the dock. I’m sure you all are amazed at my generosity. My wife was.

Your generosity knows no bounds. 😉Actually, you probably did yourself a favor as it was obviously unlucky. 👍
