Most places that rent canoes sell them off on a regular basis...at least they do down here...have two canoes from such sales...I fish from them the kids love to tip them...made a mistake and got a 16' aluminum hard to carry alone & weather vanes even when I sit reverse trying to get that extra foot forward. A 17' is much easier to carry alone & that one extra foot makes a difference in not weather vanning while solo...just that little bit of extra weight up in front of you...

If you have good balance a canoe is not to bad to fish from. We used to fly fish from canoes during the may fly hatch up in northern Minnesota. You just have to have good balance or good life preservers on. You can use spinning rods or casting rods from a canoe as well. So for me it would depend on how well I knew the lake and how much the rental cost me.

That would have to do; with my age, weight and back problems,
a kayak is out of the question !
No to mention the difficulty and inconvenience of frequent embarkation and debarkation
for 'nature breaks' !

Concur I now have pains in areas I didn't know existed...my mind hasn't figured out how old the body is...
now I know what all these old fart diseases are it's the mind telling the body I'm out of here...

...plus you can carry more comfort items in a canoe & sit more comfortably...

I can identify with the 'refridgerator door syndrome';
too many times I've walked into another room and found myself thinking 'what the hell am I doing here ?' When were you at Mogmog ? I know it's part of the Ulithi Atoll chain (McKenzie
Island); my dad was stationed there briefly, aboard a landing
craft (LCI-600), when on Jan. 12, 1945, his ship was struck by a Kaiten (Japanese suicide sub)
while crossing the harbor to deliver supplies ! He survived it,
but the concussive force of the explosion cost him his hearing;
he was down to 30 % in one ear and 50% in the other ! They
shipped him back to the states aboard a hospital ship (the USS SOLACE/AH-5) to Galveston, where he was re-assigned to a cargo ship (USS Schuyler/
AK-209) for the duration of
the war ! What was kind of
a sore point for my family is
that he never received his Purple Heart for that event, nor did he ever receive any compensation, VA benefits or assistance for his hearing loss !

My grandfather BSM1c Jess Biglay, was attached to the USS Carmita and making a shore run in a LC on Jan 12 1945. I also was in contact with Ray Partin, who was the signalman on the USS Carmita and he verified what Pop told me. He said LCI 600 was cutting through the minefield when they heard a loud explosion. No one knew it was a kailen, it was assumed that they hit one of the mines. LCI 600 was sinking and the marines on board could not help themselves. My Pop ,( without orders) took his LC into the minefield and after them , and him and seven other guys pulled 37 marines ( one was your Dad) off of the sinking LCI. There was only three casulties. It was never listed as a kailen, the explosion was officially documented as cause unknown , which is maybe why he didn't get his purple heart because it wasn't considered battle. My Pop and the others only got a formal letter ( from which the vessel names were redacted) for saving them, probably cuz they were attached to a floating ice chest. If it bothers you , you can apply for a purple heart for him.As far as benefits or compensation, the military has things they recognize as their bad and things they don't. Welfare recipients have better coverage than veterans. I always been curious as to how many people came be born because those 37 men were spared. It's very nice to see one.

those were the days when

people actually talked to each other

we had it all and didn't realize it

do you remember"double dog dare"?

all the girls had ugly gym clothes

it took three minutes for the tv to warm up

no one owned a purebred dog

a quarter was an excellent allowance

you would stoop to pick up a penny in the gutter

you got your windshield cleaned, your oil checked, tires checked and gas pumped without asking, and all for free.and you even got trading stamps

laundry detergent had free glasses ,dishes or towels inside the box

they said they would keep kids back a grade if they failed--and they actually did it

a 57 chevy was every ones dream car--to cruise,peel out,lay rubber,or street race

young people went steady

lying on your back in the grass with your friends saying things like--"that cloud looks like a"--

playing ball with no adults around to make up rules

stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals, because no one then tried to poison perfect strangers

and with all our progress don't you wish, just once, that you could step back in time and savor the slower pace, and share it with the children of today

kids actually had to be selected to play on organized baseball or football teams

no one got trophys or awards just for competing

candy cigarettes, wax miniature coke bottles with colored sugar water inside,

party lines,pea shooters,78 rpm records,green stamps,mimeograph paper

do you remember when decisions were made by "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?

mistakes were corrected by uttering "do over"

race issues meant who was the fastest runner

catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening

it wasn't odd to have more than one best friend

Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30 minute commercials for action figures

"olly olly action free" made perfect sense

spinning around getting dizzy and falling down was amusement

the worst embarrassment was being picked last for a sandlot team

war--was a card game

taking drugs meant orange flavored chewable aspirin

water balloons were a weapon

I am sharing this with you today because a friend "double dog dared "me to

remember the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and too young to care

do you remember Howdy Doody,Peanut Gallery,The Lone Ranger,The Shadow Knows,Gene Autry,Roy Rogers,Hopalong Cassidy,Bob Steele,Tom mix ,Tim Holt,Lash Larue,Randolf Scott,Trigger

,buttermilk,Silver,Scout, and oh so many others from our past?Bob Hope,Bing Crosby,Red Skelton,Fibber Mcgee and Molly,Amos and Andy

Benny Goodman,Xavier Cugat

Clark Gable,Maureen Ohara,,Spencer Tracy,Katherine Hepburn,James Cagney,Edward G Robinson,Humphrey Bogart?

Hank Williams,Ernest Tubbs,Roy Acuff--to name just a few

Do you remember??

If you remember all or most of them

then you have lived my friend
