Are you giving him private lessons for a portion of those IOU's that he owes you?

I have to ask flyguy if he has ever fished for walleye with a fly rod. There is a period of time when one can fish for walleye with a fly rod and do quite well. I used to schedule my trips to Grand Marais Minnesota during the may fly hatch which was either the last two weeks in June or the first two weeks in July. When the may Fly hatch is on you can catch your limit in between a half hour to one hour long fishing. This was in northern Minnesota and I believe that flyguy is more in the southwestern part of Minnesota. Anyway that is some wild fishing at that time of year. The idea is to almost horse the walleye into the canoe and then break the walleyes neck remove the fly from the fishes mouth and get the fly back into the water as quick as possible. If memory serves me correctly back then the limit was five walleye.

Definitely NOT a fly-fisherman,
but if you can school me on walleye fishing with spinning
gear, I'd be glad to learn ! Got a chance on some fair-sized ones out here; only caught one back
in N.H., and that was way back
in the early-60s ! As I got a little older, my preference was trout
and bass; I was not great at it,
but I did manage to land a few decent fish along the way ! Now, I'd just like to land a decent walleye and a pike before I
croak ! (Clock's running out; not getting any younger !)

Can you motor troll the lakes where you live and where those walleyes reside? If so when I used to fish with my aunt and uncle in northern Minnesota many moons ago we would fish with a minnow harness. It was a simple rig where there was a metal piece with a loop in it and you would feed that metal loop portion into the minnows mouth and out its anus where one would feed a double hook threw the loop and then allow both hooks to come up alongside the the sides of the minnow. The minnow harness also had a spinner on the front of it to attract the walleye. This worked great all of the time that I was fishing for walleye in northern Minnesota. You could also cast this rig and retrieve it at various speeds to bring in the walleyes. This also would work very well on pike. Pike generally hang out around weed-beds where there are usually an abundance of smaller fish for them to feed on. Hope this helps somewhat. I am going from memory here as I am 77 yrs young this year and I have COPD so I don't get out fishing hardly at all any more. Good luck on those walleye they are delicious to eat with fried potatoes and baked beans. Commonly referred to as a shore lunch in these parts. You might have to google that minnow harness as I have not seen any in sporting good stores for quite some time.

Yes. I have learned of how little I know.

Also that, just like on OPP, you & BB are still teaming up against me.

Unsuccessfully, I might add.

Apparently, ol' feller, a good 'nuf poker player to clean up on your bank accounts and SS checks.

But, at least you can eat fish every meal. But, affording Jack Daniels will be a challenge.

From the tone of the banter/
conversation, the friendship part seems a little strained, but the mischief part I believe ! (LOL !)

The only strain involved is getting The Ancient Mariner to pay his massive poker IOUs.

Thanks for the info, but I'm basically a shore fisherman
unless I can hook up with someone who owns a boat;
there are a few Fishing Stage members here that I may try to hook up with ! Arizona has some walleye, but is not a big walleye fishery ! Some local lakes have some, but the better walleye
lakes are 2-1/2 (Upper Lake
Mary) to 3 hours (Show Low
Lake) away ! Looked into
rentals; the only rentals
available in those areas are canoes, kayaks and pedal
boats !

If you have good balance a canoe is not to bad to fish from. We used to fly fish from canoes during the may fly hatch up in northern Minnesota. You just have to have good balance or good life preservers on. You can use spinning rods or casting rods from a canoe as well. So for me it would depend on how well I knew the lake and how much the rental cost me.
