Wow, never seen that. My partner and I were out a couple years ago and we kept seein this big splash as the osprey kept divin toward the water. We couldn't figger out what was goin on and they kept coming closer and closer. Finally we saw them chasing a king fisher and they would dive on it and it would hit the water and go under then come up and start flyin again. It finally made it to shore and the safety of the trees. Guess they didn't like it in their territory. They have nest all over our lake and raise young there ever year.

That photo from Hack does show one big snake. Most cottonmouth's here are shorter & fatter looking. We are on their northern range & our somewhat colder winters may be the reason. I've been lucky several times as moccasins have an attitude like you owe them money. A man was bitten here last year while noodling for catfish. The newspaper reported it took 19 doses of antivenom to save him. I don't know how many doses is normal but that seems like a lot. Someone is always getting a copperhead bite around here but their venom is far, far weaker than a cottonmouth

thas why I don't nor never will noodle. what's wrong wrong with those people? the catfish don't bother me, hell they don't bite. But what else is under there? I don't think so.

Question regarding your losing that stringer to the snake; if it
was that deeply imbedded that you couldn't shake it off, couldn't one of you have pinned the head down under your boot while the other decapitated it ? That way, you'd have only lost the one
tainted fish instead of the whole stringer ! Just askin' !

No way Jose. That thing probably would have let go of that fish and attacked us. That snake was huge. It was probably 5’ to 6’ long and weighed a ton. Even you would have had more sense than that. Just sayin.

If a snake stinks, and is known to chase a person, and will bite it’s own self when wounded, that’s the snake you’ve got to be aware of when you fish or hunt. One more thing. Do not cut an X into the wound and try to suck out the venom. When my friend got bit his dad did that and it caused a massive infection in his leg. He was close to having his leg amputated if they hadn’t gotten the infection under control. They’re filthy nasty critters and I believe they are Satans offspring. 👹

Must be related to my 'ex', then !
Gotta ask - what did you mean
by 'even you' should have more sense ? Are we getting snotty ?
Was there some implication
of my being lacking in sense ?
Hmmm ! And here I thought we were friends ! I guess that's what I get for thinkin' !
Another reason no one should
be trying to suck out venom is
the possibility of the person
doing so having an open wound
or bleeding gums; they can get contaminated from the venom
getting into THEIR blood ! Now
you'll have TWO people in
trouble, with the second in possibly in worse shape than
the first !

Big A, I only mentioned that to see if you’re paying attention. No, I’m not snotty, at least today. I may have been in a snotty mood when I wrote that. Probably was.
We are friends. That’s why I can be honest with you about anything. Right?👊
Thank you for your addition to not sucking out the venom.
You are absolutely correct. Another reason I thought about was, while cutting into someone to suck the venom out, they may actually cut into a blood vessel or blood vein and cause that person to bleed to death. Best thing to do is apply a tourniquet and get them to a clinic or hospital.

Another MORE probable reason is if you have ANY open cuts, scrapes or sores in your mouth or on your tongue and you suck venom into your mouth, you just envenomed yourself and are goin to be in more serious trouble than the one who got bit. And YOU are the one that will most likely NOT make it to the hospital. SERIOUSLY, this is true. So don't do it.

Actually, I just read up on ingesting snake venom. What I read was that venom tastes like sweet thin syrup. It read that ingesting it won’t hurt you unless it is injected.

In my experience it has no noticeable odor, and tastes like very syrupy water, slightly, slightly tangy with no aftertaste. Swishing hydrogen peroxide around has a stronger effect than snake venom, ...”

Makes sense saw. I knew a fellow who was hiking with a buddy and he got bit in the crotch by a water moccasin. His buddy didn’t know what to do, so he took off running to a nearby town to find a doctor. The doctor told him he would have to cut him on the snakebite and suck the venom out, then bring him to town.
The buddy ran back to his friend and his friend asked him what the doctor said.
His buddy told him “you gonna die buddy.”😲

Yeah, that'd be true. What I'm sayin is if you have an OPEN, meanin that the skin is cut a little OR you have a stomach ulcer, same thing. Those are open wounds and the venom enters your bloodstream just the same as if you are bitten and venom get into your bloodstream that way. See what I'm sayin. If you don't have any of those, open wounds, you are right. You should be fine. I bite my cheek or the side of my tongue too many times when I'm eatin to want to take that chance. Know what I mean?
