Matching reels to rods

I have a couple of rod and reel combos I'm indecisive about matching up. I plan to use 15-20 lb fluoro on both, but can't decide on which rod to mount which reel. I have a 7' MH Fast and a 6'10" M XF Shimano SLX, and then i have a regular SLX 7:1 and a DC 8:1. Which rod would you match with which reel? I'm leaning to the DC with the 6'10" M for lighter lures, but the weather sucks and i can't test out right now. Opinions?

Typically you want to match your reel to your fishing technique; the same for your rod. Example: slower speed reel and rod with parabolic bend for a dedicated crankbait rod, or a faster reel and stiffer rod for jigs and flipping.

Decide how you're going to use them (technique) and go from there! Mix it up, see what works for you on your waters!!

Based on what you have there I’d pair the 7’MH with the Dc reel. You can use it a number of different ways and the 6’10 with the 7.1 slx. Its kind of fast for a crank bait rod but you can definitely use it as a jerkbait rod, maybe even a topwater rig

My recommendation is to look at what you are planning to throw and go from there. How you’ll decide what reels to put where and what line to use will be fairly technique dependent. Personally I would put 15-17lb fluoro on the DC reel and put it on the MH rod. As for the M rod I would but the regular SLX but I would drop down to maybe 12lb fluoro or copoly depending on what you want to throw. Anything that would require 15-20lb fluoro is going to need a rod with a lot more power than a M. My suggestion is to put copoly on that so you get the added benefit of buoyancy and use it as a topwater rod for poppers and walking baits. And then you could also do a bit of shallow cranking and throw jerkbaits on it too if you’d like. But definitely look at what you plan to throw and then go from there.

Ok I have a question what if you had a 7' MH Fast Shimano SLX and a regular SLX 7:1 and a DC 8:1, which reel would you put on that rod? What line would put on?

pacer3:

You have to decide what "pairing" works best for you & your style of fishing. Try'em both out with the techniques you use most often - get the "feel" under various conditions & go from there. You'll figure it out by yourself from casting to, hooking, playing & landing fish. No two fisherman fish exactly the same way, be versatile & try different options, you'll be glad you did.

everything has gotten way too tech crazy for me , for 50 yrs. I just go with small rod -small reel , large to large , medium to medium etc. the rod has spects printed on it as to line and weight it will handle match your line to that , go fishing .
