I don't think I've ever camped over night up here without bears coming into the camp at night to scavenge. You just need to be aware that they're around and that you're sharing their territory. Don't be stupid and do be cautious.

OJdidit - I spent most of my life in WI and the summers in northern WI. The bears there, in my experience, aren't exposed to people and human food as much as they are here in TN Smokies. Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited park in the world. People and bears are too close to each other here. The bears have no fear of people. Some have no hesitation attacking people and they aren't all females with cubs. In fairness, attacks, like sharks, are still pretty rare unless people provoke them.

Bears will usually avoid people, but if you get between mama and babies watch out. Cause i'm a country girl I have learned about this stuff.

ghaynes1,
Good point, not comparing apples to apples, I guess. Either we have to educate people to secure their food to keep the bears away, or consider controlling the bears who have become nuisances. Not fair to the bears, but we created this mess.

You wouldn't by any chance be
a member of the Lorena Bobbitt
fan club, would you, Kat ? If you were, and I was your A-hole
hubby (by your description), I'd definitely be sleeping on my stomach, with at least one eye
half-open !

I'm not the violent type. Nothing to worry about as far as that part goes. If and when the time comes I will just walk away.
