Fishing in Southern Ca.
Guys and gals. fishthesurf.com. Bill Varney's web site. Check it out. And get hold of Bill. He runs a surf fishing shop down there in your neck of the woods. Buy his book - it's on amazon. Lots of good information. And no I don't work for him or have any affiliation.
Yes, that's an opal eye. A lot of fun to catch; they run hard. Hard to hook them. Usually bite once, wait then bite again.
Not sure You got my reply. I use a regular surf pole, 15 lb test, 2 oz weight @ the bottom, appx. 2 feet up tie a 1 foot leader with a #2 or #4 hook. I use muscles for bait; You can use sand crab or shrimp. There are others, but these are the best to my knowledge.

Though so, thanks.
Biggest one that I've seen.
We get them here in San Diego also, tasty.
I think the biggest Opal Eye I've caught was 17 inches. They like green peas, muscles or green sea weed. That's what I've heard.
Yeah Larry40 I got your reply. When you use mussels or sand crabs do you just throw it out and let it sit, put your rod in a sand spike? I used to fish like that down in Imperial Beach. I've been using some pretty light stuff up here to target just the perch because they don't get that big. I also used to fish down San
Diego way for opal eye. They are a challenge.
I fish north of Los Angeles-Ventura county line. There are plenty of spots you can find to fish. Just park along side the road and start finding a spot that looks good. I've fished many different areas from Leo Carrillo Beach up to Oxnard. Have caught many different kinds of fish. The best day I've had was catching 9 different kinds of fish, same day( 5 1/2 hours), same bait (muscles), same spot.
Basically, I hold the pole, let it sit on the bottom & wait for the bite. To increase my chances of catching, I use many factors; fishing around Full Moon, 1/2 Moon & New Moon; high tide around 8:00-9:30am, look for wind less than 10mph, waves not too high(under 5 feet is best), cloudy is better, but will fish sunny days. Oh & I don't fish weekends (avoid the crowds). I use muscles for bait (I get them off the rocks), & if I have to swim out to get them I will(68 years old). Just about ANY fish will bite on muscles. Have used: sand grabs, squid, pike mackerel, mackerel, shrimp, ghost shrimp, etc; muscles have done best. Best of luck to all you1 Larry C. (Southern California Fish Man)
