Dailyfisher good information. please update your location. I'm sure there are other folks on here from the L.A. area but they don't have their location on their posts either.

Corvina fishing in the surf with sand crab patterns can be great. Call the Fishermen's Spot at 818 785 7306 for times, tides, best beaches, and other info. They can probably set you up with a guide, too.

If you venture up the coast 40 miles or so to Oxnard or Ventura, call Lee Baerman at 805 486 8226. He runs a beach-fishing guide service and your investment of a few bucks will be well spent. Good guy and a hoot to fish with, too.

Guys at the Fishermen's Spot can tell you about carp in the L.A. River, too. Concrete banks are steep (at least I think they are) so be wary where you step. But 8- to 12-pound carp on a 5-weight are great.

Visiting some friend for a long weekend. Will probably stay in the city for the majority of the time. Should I bring a rod?

Sure. It's always better to have something and not need it then to need something and not have it.
