4 strand braid is rougher for "cutting" kelp and stuff and the 8 strand braid is smoother. Typically 50 lb braid is about the dia of 12 lb mono. some on party boats don't like it when braid is used because when you have a good size fish on there is a risk of cutting other peoples lines. For my sturgeon for example I use 50 lb Tuff line braid and since they usually don't use their sight that much I tie my hooks up with 80 lb Dacron to take the abuse.
