Hey guys! What line would you recommend for lingcod/salmon/other decent sized aggressive fish? I’ll be fishing on a breakwater with kelp and all that. I’ll be using anywhere from 1oz to 5oz lures...

I use 40-50 mono in northern Cali for lings. We usually throw 8-10oz jig heads with 8-10 inch trailers. Need that little bit of give for those deep hooksets and head shakes

Why not just run a mono leader and 30lb braid?

You'll get to the bottom faster and need less lead to hold bottom?

Fishing a couple hundred feet of water with mono is like using a rubber band.

I do run braid. 65# to a top shot of mono. I don't trust 30# braid for bass unless I'm finessing. The minimum for deep sea out here is 50# braid for how big the lings get

So I should run 30lbs braid, with 40lbs mono leader? How would I set that up? Use a swivel? Or..?

50-65# spectra depending on the size of your reel with a connection knot to a top shot. I wouldnt trust 30# braid with kelp. We use more textured braid here to cut kelp (so no smooth braid like izorline or jbraid) We fish deep for our lings out here hence why I use 40# mono but youll have to experiment with the line in your waters. 25-40# mono/floro is a starting point.

I’ve never used two lines before so this is all new to me. So should I spool about 70% braid, and then the rest mono?

If you want to get fancy, wind-on leaders or hollow splice.

Why not just run strait braid? Lings or any other saltwater fish I've caught aren't line shy, so why take the chance of a failed knot or broken or cut leader? Maybe you feel that heavy mono holds up better than braid with toothy critters and sharp rocks, is that it?

Number 1 braid cuts fingers like a knife.
2. It is slick so it's hard to grip
3. I always fish two rod length s of mono for a shock tip. See 1 and 2

At least, I might even go up to 65#, wouldn't hurt. Braid works really well if you happen to be jigging, no stretch, specially in deeper water.

We use 65 pound braid for all of our bottom fish as we are dropping anywhere rom 8-16 ounce weights depending on current. We are jigging from a boat in 65-100 feet of water unless we're gong for Halibut and then its' up to 300 feet.

All the more reason to use straight braid.

Straight Power Pro Braid. Better feel with no line stretch and no knots to break on the big one.
