Baitcaster for finesse?
Hi all! New-ish fisherman here. I’m in northern Illinois fishing for bass. Is there a baitcaster that will handle finesse fishing without many birds nests? Not thrilled with my spinning reel.

Sounds like you need a better spinning reel...
I really think a nice ML spinning setup is the way for finesse. However, there’s a Daiwa JDM casting reel designed for light gear which you can get on tacklewarehouse. I haven’t used it but it’s high end Daiwa so I assume it’s pretty nice.

Thanks for the reply. I bought a Jordan Lee spinning combo from bass pro. Had them spool line on it because I have never done it before. Line constantly falls off the spool when I lift the bail to cast. It’s super frustrating.

It’s probably overspooled. Post a picture.

Run warm water over the line on your reel. I picked that up from a kvd video and it helps. Looks like fluorocarbon which has more memory in general. For best experience, Next time try spooling with 10 pound braid and attach a fluorocarbon leader with an alberto knot. Most will use a uni to uni for leader but alberto knot is best imo

Sounds like the spool is overfilled. As far as casting light baits with a casting reel Google BFS or Bait Finesse System. It's a technique that originated in Japan that's been gaining popularity here the last few years. Usually involves upgraded bearings and shallow, lightweight spools among other things.

I assume BPS and Cabelas do not pay their “outfitters” very much based on the experience I have time after time at their stores in Bolingbrook, Hammond, and Portage. It’s so disappointing.
You are much better off taking that line off, getting some 6-8lb mono and watching a YouTube video. It is really easy!

I will definitely do this. Thank you

You can take off the spool with line from the fishing reel and put it in warm water. That removes some of the "springiness" that new line tends to have. Especially if not spooled onto correctly.

I use a light Diawa bait caster for lighter lures. Heavier lures for bigger fish go on the Abu Garcia/ St Croix. Check how heavy your line is, keep a decent tension on the line with lure, and keep your thumb on the spool when casting.
I very much agree with getting a nice smooth spinning reel setup, especially for the lighter stuff.

If you can cast lures under about 4 grams with a reasonably priced baitcaster you are a better man than me. There are really small baitcasters but they cost a fortune....maybe there is some newer stuff I'm not aware of though
You do get better casting accuracy with a baitcaster but I learned how to use my finger on the spool of my spinning reels to perform the same job the thumb does on a baitcaster.
What problems have you been having with your spinning reel? Bird nest on 1000 size reel with light braid?

Line constantly falls off the spool when I lift the bail to cast. 10lb mono

This can be caused by the mono line memory but it's pretty likely the spool is over filled. It can also be good to do a long "clearing cast" every now and again where you reel in with a decent amount of tension by winding the line through your fingers or winding in fast if there is enough weight to pack the line down onto the spool. You may also not have used enough tension on the line when filling the reel.
If your going to be using a retrieve with a lot of pauses it pays to keep a close eye on how the line is distributing on the spool, if it doesn't look right then do the clearing cast.

What size reel is this? 10 lb. line is not finesse.
