I'm pretty new to bass fishing and love it, but I feel like I'm holding them wrong. Do I need to stick my finger further in their mouths or is it normal?

Those teeth are sharp. I'd rather tear up my thumb than their gills.

Good to know. I just don't want to be hurting them by putting pressure on their teeth. Then again I'm shoving a hook through their lips so I guess I'm overthinking

Those teeth eat crawdads, fish and your thumb.
They are fine

Completely normal, just make sure you hold them vertically or else you can break their jaw

You can also hold them horizontally but make sure you do it with two hands. One grippin the lip and the other near the anal fin holding the rest of their body weight up.
If you grip em by the lip and try to hold them horizontally you increase the mortality rate substantially.
Get that sandpaper thumb! Tight lines!

I consider it a trophy that only other bass fishermen will recognize but they will instantly know what it is and will know you had a good day on the water.

STP! “Sandpaper Thumb Pad”!
Bass thumb, sandpaper thumb are all signs of successful. If you get those means your catching fish. Sometime when you hold them correctly (several options posted on here) they put a move on you. You must be catching some fish. Congrats.
