I was a high school junior the last time the Chiefs played in the Super bowl. I remember the principal giving us permission (along with teachers !) to "skip out" at about.11am, so we could get downtown for the parade at noon. He later said to the parents, when questioned later, he did so because he knew we would skip anyway, so saved us making excuses and...."if I can go...which I did, by the way...why not the kids ? Cool guy, that Dr. Ludwig !!! Fifty years ago ???....damn...hey wait a minute....does this mean I am old ???? In that regard, I thank my lucky stars I live in "obliviousness" of the fact ! Go Chiefs !!!
I was a high school junior the last time the Chief... (show quote)

I was a sophomore at Turner HS that year. Where did you live?

You were just "down the road", I lived in Lenexa, attending Shawnee Mission Northwest, the "new" fifth Shawnee Mission school !
I see you live in Lawrence, as does my sister. I attended Baker University, 15 miles south of you, so.... Baldwin City being a "dry" city, me being a typical college kid.... I spent a fair amount of time on the Vinland road heading to "The Stables", Louise's (50ยข schooners on Friday afternoons), the Red Dog Inn and all the other great "imbibing establishments" of Lawrence.
I have a great bumper sticker I got the last time I was in Lawrence on "Mass" street, it reads --

Lawrence, 23 sq. miles of reality, surrounded by.........Kansas.

Kinda echoes some of the message in a book written by a fellow Emporia boy, Thomas Frank. The book is a "sequel", if you will, or maybe more of a "re-telling", of a book by the same name, written by the most famous Emporian, journalist William Allen White, in the 1920's. The gist of both books is... Just look how brilliant and educated the average Kansan truly is, and yet...they continue to make horrible political choices that ensure that true success isn't coming anytime real soon. Apparently not much movement beyond what was....a century ago !
The name of both books........."What's the Matter with Kansas ?"
I think, but may be wrong, you have to leave a place, to miss it. (isn't there a song lyric..."how can I miss you,...if you never go away ? LOL !) I miss my many friends and family still in Kansas, but I and the other four siblings don't live in Kansas anymore and we certainly don't miss flat land, muddy rivers, nor the weather there !
I remain...Loyal to the Chiefs and Jayhawks basketball......forever !!!
