Hi guys! I'm pretty new to fishing, although I have started quite a long time ago.. just haven't been practicing. My father used to take me to fishing trips when I was in my teens, and I have to say it was definitely a very lovely experience. I have recently gotten more into fishing out of my own initiative now when I'm in my 30s, but let's be real. As long as I like it, I'm totally clueless about fishing. I'm reading the forums though, checked some articles and even got a book about fishing for beginners. So my knowledge will surely improve as the time goes, but as for now I am literally green.

That said, I wanted to ask you guys what do you consider to be the best bait? I know this is a very broad question, that it will be hard to give one, definite answer to, but would love to know what veterans think in general.

Thanks!

You are right - it's a very broad topic, but also a very interesting one. So, based on my own experiences, I would say spider jigs when it comes to bass are the best. For trout, really any kind of flies will do. And the most important of any fishing rules out there - every fish will eat a worm, so if I were to say in general, that's probably the most universal and best choice.

Really depends on what we are after. Bass are very delicate when it comes to temperature changes and water condition, so they tend to be tricky and it heavily depends on where you fish, some regions can be much easier compared to others. The biggest trout I caught though was using a jerk bait, which for many people was a huge surprise. Yes, primarily I was surprised too, but despite the common view, that they may not work (or at least not a desirable degree) for trouts, I actually managed to get my personal record trout using one. So as you see, it really heavily depends on the region where you fish too and every situation/environment is different. Fishing despite being so simple, is actually a very complex activity and there is so many different factors to consider, that may work for me, but not for others, and it's worth to keep it in mind.

Too many factors to consider really. What usually works for me is senko in watermelon or green pumpkin. Just throw and twitch it, and the bait should do all the rest. So far it's the best bait I have used and I know that many other fishers think similar. But remember about the colors also, bright colors, like for example lemon or orange and different shades of brown or purple.

They all have their use here, and may do better depending on what you want to catch and where are you fishing exactly. Actually, even such small details like phase of the moon, color of the sky or clarity of water play a huge role in what bait will be most applicable. But you will not find all this info on the internet, especially as every location tends to vary quite a lot, and so do the fish that we intend to catch. It's all about the experience, try out what works best for you and under what circumstances, and what doesn't. Good luck with finding "the best" bait for you.

Also consider investment in jigs, swimbaits, crankbaits and many others. Be prepared and have your arsenal full and ready for every situation. This will not cost you much, and will definitely allow you to make a much more thorough analysis on what the situation is where you fish. As Cerberus said, even technically insignificant factors like sunrise/sunset or phase of the moon, time of the day and water temperature play a huge role here. Keep experimenting - remember, you are doing this for fun. Once you practice enough, you will be able to intuitively pick the best bait for current situation without really giving too much thought into it.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions guys. As I said I knew that this is a broad topic, but I actually never would have thought that it's so complex. As long as I knew the water temperature and thus time of the day will be important, but going as far as to take phase of the moon into consideration... well, I would have never done that. Thanks again for clarifying. I will invest a bit into having the full arsenal and I will do my own research based on what works best for me. I will add though, that I have noticed stickbaits worked best in slightly higher temperatures as the fish probably do not eat much then, so I let the stickbaits sit a bit and then give them a crank. Will see, lots of factors to consider indeed, so there is surely a big journey ahead of me! Thanks for the tips, I will try and possibly post here whenever I get to some conclusion, so it may be of help for others as well.

Anything you can find to read by Buck perry (fisherman extraordinaire) also known as the father of structure fishing. This would definitely be to your advantage. The man was a genius when it came to understanding fish and their movements. Follow his teaching and you will be ahead of the game. Good luck

Any West Coast Salmon Fisherman out there? Salmon and Steelhead are my fish of choice! Anyone have anything interesting to share about there special riggings or bait? ( Herring, Spinners etc. ). I spend a lot of time on the water and am always opened to trying new strategies! Thanks
