Putting out trout lines for catfish we seen many snakes and when tossed weight of trout line near shore a huge thing jumped into Gheenoe! We thought moccasin and made way to outer ends of boat ready to jump and seen it, an alligator gar flopping around. Whew that was close. Hair raising experience of our youth!

Fished central Florida for 8 years in a pond prowler. Gators made me uncomfortable but never attacked.
Moccasins were another story

Just don't drag a stringer with a fish on it behind your boat. Don't drag fish on a string if you are wading. No sense in tempting fate or gators! We have them here in Jacksonville too. Unfortunately, people feed them...They have no fear of humans. And they do have a taste for small dogs. Remember that.

just don't mess with them
I've had them swim right near the boat. just don't put fish on a stringer

Thanks, all. Appreciate your valuable feedback. I’ll be sure to keep the fish in an on-board cooler and not a stringer!

What should I expect from water moccasin behavior?

Company most likely.

That's how they are here in NC. Keep an eye on your surroundings while you are idling.

I wouldn’t try it.Biggest gator I ever saw was in the St. John’s and it rocked my 17ft. Bass Boat when it decided to swim away.
Lots of stick ups etc. that can puncture your inflatable.

Snakes flee from us too and its not breeding season till summer. All mothers will protect babies! Do not jump into a nest period. Be more concerned with punctures, have a patch kit handy and go slow till you learn the hazards. Enjoy the wild life from a distance, don`t poke-em! Tight lines

Never got bit, but frequently encountered them on the bank or close to it. Heavy bodied, always a stripe on head, float on top of water. Watch for them, back away. Never have a stringer. Otherwise, you'll probably catch a few bass at least 5 lb.

Next month we are traveling to Welaka, FL with our RV to stay for at least 2 months. I'm taking my 9 ft. inflatable to fish with. I know this section of the river is fairly well populated, but should I be concerned with alligators?

Read the data.

Great article listed above.
I’m not sure I’d be comfortable kayaking near gators. Puts me too close to the water and maybe teeth!
