Graphite rods really that bad ?
Sup , I just picked up lews American hero speed stick and saw it was made of graphite . I see alot of people online talking about how graphite breaks super easy , anyone have experience with the rod I got? If not I got the combo for about 70$ what are the chances it breaks easy on me?

Yes they break easy compared to glass or composite but some last forever. We sold 100s of the lews combos at sport shows at my last job and had really good luck with them compared to most 13Fishing rods or a handful of okuma models.
Most of its random, some of it is how the retailer handled it. Sometimes you did something catastrophic without noticing and it broke a few trips later. They aren't the best in sub zero temps either.
I'm personally a huge fan of the Lews products. My only complaint is that their spinning reels run on the small size but that's typical from bass companies.

Won’t buy Okuma rods I had three rods breaks on me.
I'm old.... I can remember when graphite came out... Those that share the privilege of old age remember how we would "check the action" on a rod by holding the rod BY THE TIP and shaking it..... After three broken tips/rods I slipped out of the store. I found out then that graphite rods were very tender... My best rod back in those days was fiberglass... MEd action... sweet...
Now days I read up on 'em first... chuckle.
Want durability? Try ugly stick, rhino tuf, glass/graph composite
I'm still using my first graphite rod. I've had it for 41 years. It's a 6 foot spinning rod that still has as much backbone as when it was new! Guess I got one of the good ones.
If you abuse anything it will break.
Graphite is a great rod.Ugly Stic are terrible rods. They may not break but neither will telephone poles but would you want to fish with a telephone pole.
Ugly Stix are heavy and have very little graphite in them and poor action and not much sensitivity.....Go with a decent graphite rod and you won’t regret it.
My Wife had two graphite rods brake in two weeks, I'll not be buying them again.
Graphite has been out for years..I have fished them for over 25 years and have never broken one.
What was the manufacturer? Maybe they had a defect.
Buy a brand name. Most good rods have a guarantee and wil be replaced if broken.
I would have to agree with Salesrep that Ugly sticks are terrible rods and they are made of technology that was developed over twenty years ago and they have not changed as of today. Every rod I make is stress tested under a heavy load and not one graphite blank has ever broke and that goes for the light MHX,GLX or any other graphite like IMX. Even the old Bantom rods made by Shimano never broke and those where old school rods made in the early 80’s. I have had a few Okuma and even Lamiglas rods break but these were production rods and production rods are almost made to break and it has nothing to do with graphite. With any production rod There is a good chance that it will break if it is used incorrectly.
Graphite can be brittle. Stick with the major manufacturers.

Remember: egg shells will not break if squeezed a certain way.... Ugly rods rule in salt waters where the fish are beasts. Never attempted to fish with a telephone pole.... interesting. Paul Bunyan is that you? Bamboo! Now there's a wood rod! Yeaah, I have graphite rods... (Just no longer flex them at the tip!) <grin> yet, fiberglass MED/HEAVY rules for my kindda fishing. Anyone remember EPPS sporting good stores? They had a cardboard barrel loaded with rods for $1-$2 per... well for fresh water fish. chuckle Now to give the elite a heart attack: We used sticks with a line/thread attached to a hook to catch fish! LOL Enjoy what ya have and move up when you've found out why it doesn't work for ya. It's your money. Spend it the way you wish.

Selfishbum I fished a 1 mile creek flowing out of a place called Woods Lake below Telluride about 25 years ago using a branch I broke off a nearby bush, a piece of mono, a hook and a worm. Caught several small cutthroat and, to this day, that’s the funnest day of fishing I’ve ever had.
I've got 2 Penn graphite 10' surf rods, bought 5 years ago, caught numerous blues, stripers & fluke with no issues. Even battled a 100+ pound ray for nearly an hour on one, rod was bent in U shape due to size of fish, no problem. Love their light weight for throwing lures.
