I'm gonna go with a bad reel too. Should be pretty even winding. No such thing as a bad fisherman. You're fishing and not on your couch right?

Sometimes when I remove a spool (Mitchel) and replace it with another the spool, it can be difficult to reseat properly.

You're first problem was buying a Shakespeare reel. Throw that thing out and but a Quantum,ABU Garcia, or a Shimano.
