The 10/8 lb combination is what I use on my (spinning) worm rods, and casting is excellent. The Duo Lock snaps work excellent on any rig you're not going to thread through a sinker. The EWG worm hooks work just as well for a weedless craw, weightless, setup too. You can also use a weighted hook like this "Blockhead" ,or a Shakey Head, if you need a little weight but want to use the snap.

Looks like the craw and dingers I was using. I like how the dinger has that handy lil pocket for the hook to sit in. I had 2 nice hits on that craw at Needwood but unfortunately I wasn't good at setting the hook well enough and lost em. I had the hook pretty close to the top of the bait as well. That's why I was thinking of buying a hook with a weed guard instead to help with hooksets instead of Tex rigged. It's very rocky around there, lots of crawfish I'm sure

Don't bury the hook point too deep.
I use EWG hooks alot.
Extra Wide Gap.
I think when fish clamps down the exposed sha k on the bottom helps push the point up

Now that's just my opinion.
No sure how others feel about it๐Ÿ‘

That's what I should have bought instead of the standard offset worm hooks with the regular gap. I didn't know any better until you tube told me the difference. But I already spent the $$ and I hate wasting money. Good thing is I've already lost a few to snags lol
Need to buy some straight shank I can fish crawdad baits without them being weedless too or maybe one of those hooks with the weed guard on them

Here is one article to help explain line differences.

Good article, helping me decide a bit and figure out presentation. I think I'll go with the 10 lb braid and 10 or 8 lb fluoro as the leader. I guess that's good enough for what I've been fishing . I'll have to pick up some of those quick snaps too for some lures. I have some of those quick snaps that are attached to swivels , so you think these work the same as the ones without the swivels attached? Don't think they would work well with Tex rigged though I'd have ta tie those on. It's all good learning though

I've seen braided line as light as 5 lbs. 5 lb braided line is as thin as a hair and for me and my old eyes it's hard to tie because it is so fine. If you decide to use braid, I would load the braid on and then top it off with 5 or 10 yards of a good fluorocarbon. The braid should last you at least 5 years. The fluorocarbon will probably last you less then less than a year but you are only using 5 to 10 yards at a time. So you can change it out often and yet keep the price down.

Ok will do thanks :)

Dta you could try this for distance. It's a fillable sliding bubble float.
You can add water for more distance.
Position bobber stop up or down to obtain the depth you want.
The stop will pass thru the guides.๐Ÿ‘

That's cool I may try it.
Do you feel that you lose any sensitivity in feeling bites with one on if your fishing like a plastic worm? Wouldn't matter prob if your fishing a crankbaits or such id think.

I always use a little lighter leader because I figure if I get snag I just loose my leader and not a lot of main line. Just my thoughts.

So if I go 10 lb or 15 lb braid I should 8 lb fluoro leader then? I don't think I need much more heavier than that even if I happen to go to Solomons and try those little stripers off the pier.

Gain more distance n not as much force needed in cast.
Watch lure n stop line when it hits the water.
No I don't use my thumb to control the line during cast. Most do I don't.
It's whatever you feel good n can manage.
Kinda like not switching hands. I do n alot of the pros do.

I reread this, I hope the lure stops when it hits the ground or that's one heavy lure lol. Im assuming you mean when the line stops unraveling after the lure hits? When I get a new one I'll def have to practice. I think I was just adjusting the tension based on how fast the lure fell and not how much line spun out after that

I have green white blue camo red.

Slims son Ty was using blue camo at the Eagle n he caught alot fish.
Biggest was a 3.1lb LM.
I have one set up with yellow for fineness fishing 6lb copolamar 8' leader ๐Ÿ‘
Topwater n most moveing baits I go straight braid.
Started useing leaders on tubes n stick baits.
I'll keep track of the two ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽฃ

I read somewhere that braid doesn't do well on top water because it floats back into the bait, is that true?
I may go with a blue or yellow just because I don't wanna have to keep taking my glasses out to tie on lures, getting harder to see without them. You use leaders to keep that stretch in the hookset right , vs just straight braid?

Thatโ€™s a lot of votes for braid. Personally, I only use it on my light tackle striper rods and for casting flukes in the bushes for largemouth. 20 lb braid is excessive if you are fishing for bass or panfish. Too much to cover but one example is drop-shooting. Your want the lightest mono or fluorocarbon possible. A lot of guys use 6 or 8 lb. I use to fish with a guy at a local clear water reservoir. He insisted on using 17 lb nanofil. I stuck to my 10 or 12 lb co-polymer line and would typically out fish him 3 to 1. There are a lot of conditions to consider and then there is personal preference. I recommend trying a few different lines and decided what is best for you and your style of fishing. If you get into finesse fishing, youโ€™ll take that braid off pronto.

That's exactly what I was wondering. Everyone's saying use a heavier LB weight but most I've ever used is 8 to 10 lb line. I don't want to overspend on line since I already made the mistake of buying all those garbage mono. Braid seems like it has a lot involved in using it and don't wanna get over my head. And it's not recommended for top water or fishing plastic worms right?

You can drop down to a 14lb or 10 lb braid but I recommend the 20lb and not less than 15lb flouro. The 20 is stronger for the teeth that will be biting on it if they swallow the hook.

As for the hook end i like the Palomar knot tied to a clip like shown below. Easier to change baits without having to tie a new knot every time.

Is this just because it's braid or does it depend on type of fish your trying to catch? I just fish bass n trout right now, nothing with big teeth like walleye or pike so not sure if 15+ will be too heavy for the small lures I'm throwing on this medium rod

Is there a limit to how light you can go with braid, I mean can it be used with ultralite or light spinning reels?
I've been having a spat of bad luck with of my reel breaking one after the other. Both were a decade old so I guess it was time. The one I stripped that nut on the shaft when I took it apart cleaning it. Lol so now I need to get 2 reels. Both were cheap budget South Bend reels so maybe I'll spend a lil more on them, but I had 4lb test on the ultra lite and 6 on the medium action one. Wasn't sure if braid goes down that low or should I just get the higher price fluorocarbon. I'll stay away from the $5 mono this time for sure. I've never used lb above 10 before.

3/8/23 I fished a new area this morning. I found a shallow flat about 3' or 4' of water with rocks along the shore and scattered rocks out from shore. Caught about 15 or 20 didn't count them. No 11-12-13"ers, but my friend was happy to get them. All caught with Jerry's Perch Spinner Bait.

Hey how did that spinnerbait that I lost at centennial end up there lol

Nice catch btw I've never eaten white perch before. You seem to have lots of good fishing spots up there

Yes I did that a bit with the Dingers but you can only cast em so far from shore without weight

Well, it looks like you are learning about fishing. You yourself have figured out that in that spot lures with exposed hooks don't work too good. By using T-rig worms etc. and top water lures, you can catch fish there. So try different top water lures and different plastics. As you fish that spot, you will learn where the fish are and how to get them to bite. At times, you may want to place your lure in the very near vicinity of the brush and/or rocks.

Just my nickels worth.

Yea I walked halfway around the lake and finally found spots where the timber was gone from the water and it was mostly rocky. Got 2 nice hits on the crayfish plastic , unfortunately couldn't properly set the hook. Still learning how to set it when it's rigged weedless. I could have gotten away with a regular hook and bullet weight but all I had was offset worm hooks. That fish even pulled my bait a ways before throwing it. A shame.

I hate losing things also Ranger.
With my boat I can usually get close enough to either dislodge it or cut it close.
When I was bank fishing for cats n carp
braid n floro wasn't a thing
I did do alot of wading back then when I could. Used 10 to 20lb mono then๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽฃ

I'm at Needwood and I have lost 4 lures in 2 hrs. Wtf I must have a curse upon me. This is like 10 lues this month already .
Lots of rocks here and underwater timber from shore. Lost my good and only micro weedless Jig, my last cast master and 2 drop shots. Only things seem to work is the Tex rig craw and top waters. BUT a bluegil hot my popper and pulled it....into.a log. Lol luckily I got it back.
Having trouble telling hits from rock snags there's so many rocks here.

Only 1 hit all-day since 12 and it shook loose.
