The Pisces Fleet has reported another action-packed week for the second week in 2024. The striped marlin release count remained steady for those searching for billfish action. The good news is that the stripers are showing in various areas surrounding Land’s End, indicating they should be in the neighborhood for a while. More

Imperial Beach (including the 9 Mile Bank)
12.13.23 -Fishing at the 9 Mile Bank is currently providing the most productive action. Guys are fishing in 400 to 700 feet of water and catching lots of bocaccio, Mexicans, bank perch, green spots, and more.
If whitefish is your target, try Buoy#3 or the Whistler. You want to use squid strips on little hooks as whitefish have small mouths. Some sheepshead are here for the guys fishing with shrimp.

The sand bass bite at the IB Pipe is probably the best bet for catching some bass. You might get a few sculpin and maybe a halibut if you are lucky! …Fish Dope

Coronado Islands/Rockpile
Yellowtail usually begin to show on the Flats, east of South Island, and down to the Rockpile in 150 to 250 feet of water around this time of year. They have been showing here in the winter for the past 8 to 10 years running.
The trick is to locate schools of yellowtail on the sonar and figure out which way they are going. Then, try to get ahead of them and drop yoyo iron on them.

**** ATTENTION **** You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from any tuna pens. If you don’t, you are at risk of losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Here we are almost into the middle of December, and the water temp out at the Banks is still 76 degrees. There was no wahoo out at Thetis yesterday, but there were still a lot of big, fat, yellowfin tuna.

We are not giving up on wahoo yet.

All this week, we had excellent weather for going to the Banks!

We stopped on the way back by the Grouper Rocks and caught some nice grouper and huachinango with live bait – shrimp. Inside fishing is still very good with live bait! We had limits on almost everything: grouper, pargo, trigger, and corvina. We still have a few shy snook and halibut showing up…Cheri King

San Jose del Cabo
A happy couple with an impressive day s catch including dorado, wahoo, and yellowfin tuna.
December 10th, 2023
Weather conditions remain ideal for anglers and families arriving for the Holiday season. We have enjoyed a few cooler mornings in the low 60s and beautiful sunny days in the mid-80s.

Action throughout this week remained consistent and similar to last week. The main targets continue to be dorado and wahoo. It seems that the wahoo bite has slowed down a bit. This week, it was hard to catch the chiwili at the Gordo. The boats that looked for them were lucky if they caught two to three bait fish in almost the same number of hours. While fishing for chiwili, boats mostly caught green jacks, also known as cocinero. Even though not the favorite bait to troll with, the cocinero did catch several nice wahoo this week. There were not many strikes fast-trolling Rapalas or rigged ballyhoo, although a few of the smaller 10 to 15-pound wahoo were caught while casting shiny jigs on the surface, most strikes came closer to the boat.

The dorado bite was the main highlight this week. Many anglers said they couldn’t focus on the wahoo as the dorado took most of their bait. Most boats have been able to load up on their dorado limit with nice-sized fish. We continue to see big bulls, with many in the 30 to 40-pound range. Many of the boats are catching their limit, and they are also releasing multiple nice ones daily, which makes for a great catch-and-release experience.

The best fishing grounds this week for wahoo have been La Fortuna, CardĂłn, and Punta Gorda. The dorado are scattered throughout La Fortuna to Palmilla, with some bigger ones caught at La Fortuna and inner Gordo. We have also heard that the dorado bite is wide open on the Cabo Pacific side. A few anglers fishing for dorado and wahoo managed to hook a few striped marlin and sailfish.

The tuna bite at the Gordo remains slow. We did hear of a few bigger fish hooked later in the afternoon, with one weighing in at 197 pounds. Again, only a couple hooked up out of 10 to 15 boats. These occasional tuna were hooked on strips of squid, live or dead sardina, and live chiwili.

Not a lot of bottom action at this time. We have caught some snappers (red snapper and barred pargo) while jigging on different structures. A few sierra and roosterfish were also caught while slow trolling live bait closer to the shore. …Good Fishing, Brian …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

Throwback to earlier days at our Cabo San Lucas oasis, Where Captain Tony’s and Pisces Yachts & Sportfishing shop now stand tall, there once was a FONATUR office. Oh, the stories these cobblestone streets could tell. And let’s not forget the timeless presence of Tesoro Hotel (formerly Plaza Las Glorias) in the background, standing tall to this day. • As a result, in joint action between FONMAR, CONAPESCA, PROFEPA, ROC, and SEMAR, 1,600 kilos of shrimp without permits were BUSTED.
Following the indications of the Governor, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, in the sense of permanently monitoring the correct use of marine resources on the South Californian coasts, personnel from the Fund for the Protection of Marine Resources (FONMAR), the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA), the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR), the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and in response to complaints from the fishing sector, Network of Citizen Observers A.C. The season’s opening trip was terrific in Laguna Ojo de Liebre! There were many whale moms and babies and mating trios to see. Of course, they were still a bit shy, but we saw a bit of everything – breaching, spy hopping, courtship, and those cute little newborns! I’d say we saw about 30 whales in front of our camp.
