My Son was lucky enough to get an Opening Day reservation for Barrett Lake (San Diego) today! We had a very good day of fishing and catching. My son, his buddy and I caught about 70 LMB! Here’s a couple of pictures.

Hey Ranger I forgot to mention in my former reply that a lot of hardcore bass fishermen back then were catching 100+ a day. I looked up Barrett on SDFISH just now and saw the prices now and the bad condition the lake is in now. I gave up on SD lakes in 2016 and now fish SD bay no cost and best day for 2 of us was 176 mostly spotted bay bass in 8 hrs fishing south bay in 2015.

I got to fish barrett the second and third year it opened up to fishing I think it was in the 90s. It was only open for duck hunting season for years before opening for fishing. When the main road in washed out it was closed for years. We caught around 25 or 30 each for 3 of us, but none were over 2 1/2 lbs.And we couldn’t take in our own boats and had to be ushered in at certain times and same certain times to leave. The road in was on private property. I had a friend who new someone that got us in without going thru the lottery system they had then. I think we paid $25 each plus boat rental. It was cluster back then so we went 2 times and done!!

You should have told that gray pelican he was about 10 miles away from home! Before I got my boat I fished on shelter island pier and we couldn’t take our eyes of the mackerel bait we were using because they weren’t shy about stealing it just inches from us.

I had my grandson Tyler meet me at SanV this morning to do a little catching. As we are leaving the dock, he says "Papa" we should have a bet on first, biggest and most..........you are on!!! Ten minutes into our first stop, I announce that you just lost the first bet. I told him our goal for the day was 20 fish. Couple of minutes later I land a nice 2.6 and let him know that he is down on all three bets and that he had better get going. He then lands the next three, and I am thinking maybe I should have kept my mouth shut. I then go up 4-3 in the next half hour, and he says maybe we should make a move. Alrightee, that we shall do lad. We get to our next stop, and first cast, he gets one, next cast, another, then another. Not suppose to be going this way. He lets me know that I am now down 6-4. Hmmm, better get going old man! I get the next three and take a commanding 7-6 lead. A pelican shows up and starts following us everywhere we go, and proceeds to start trying to get our baits right next to the boat. Stayed with us for quite awhile, was hoping to get one and feed him just to get him away. He finally leaves and we get back to catching. Over the next hour the score goes to 7-7. 8-8, 9-9 and now we are both anxiously trying to get #10 first. He hooks up with a nice fish (about 3lb) and it jumps about 6 ft from the boat and spits the hook, bummer for him, lol! A minute later, I land #10. Now we just need one more for our 20. I manage two more, and it is getting close to leaving time. He says he really want to catch his 10th, so I tell we will head toward the dock and make one stop near there so he can try for that fish. On his first cast , you guessed it, he hooks up and lands a nice 2+ and we head for the docks. I am also in the process of teaching him how to tow the boat and put it in and out of the lake. He did his first successful backing the trailer into the water and hooking the boat up. Proud Papa here!!! I know the story is a little lengthy, but we don't get many days like this so decided to share. Enjoy the pics!

Great day with Tyler!!! You’re teaching him the right way to fish and towing and launching the boat. He’s learning from the best “catcherman”Im doing some “catching” up around the property before fixing leaking LENA so we can hit the bay again. LW.

There was still segregation in the 50's. There were "white" stations and "black" stations. When a "black" song became popular, it would be "covered" by a "white" singer/group so that it could be played on the "white" stations. Pat Boone also covered Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill. Many times the lyrics were also "modified". R&R was said to be "white man's words with black man's music". Thanks to people like Wolfman Jack for broadcasting from acoss the border so we could all hear all the music.

How many of you went to 6th grade camp? I don’t know if they still do it? We went there in 1955 or 56 and they had a juke box in the dinning hall, and on it was the song that Little Richard did originally called tutti-frutti but it was sung by Pat Boone, yuk!! Google Pat Boone singing it and then Little Richard. Richard was a little weird but he could rock and roll!! Long live rock and roll and heavy metal. I’ll never be too old to listen to good Rock and Heavy Metal. Never really got into country even though I’ve lived in the country areas of San Diego for 50 years, far from the city of east SD that I grew up in. We don’t have any homeless in Alpine but 10 miles west all the way to the ocean it’s out of control.

Hey Steve I guess I opened a 55 gal bucket of worms with the OJ Post. It turned 180 degrees to a hissin match!! I better stick to music trivia or fishing outings. OBG and I are going to the bay on Friday, hope we have some pictures to share. This will my first time since having my left shoulder replaced on OCT 26th. He’s going to have to teach me how to catch? I think this is the longest I’ve gone without fishing since I got my boat in 2013. Hope all goes well with your mom. My mom lived to 94 but starting with Alzheimer’s at 80 her last 14 years were in a Alzheimer’s facility. Have a safe trip!!

Today OJ’s fate has finally come! Most of us know where he’s spending his here after? God knows whether he was guilty or not. If there is really a place called Hell that’s probably where he will be. Just my opinion! What’s yours?? Agree or disagree?

So the day started out a normal beautiful day with no wind and fish to be had. Was on the lake early, and caught my first fish at 6:45am. Rest of the morning hit a lot of different spots and picked up 7 more in the 1-2lb range. About 12:30 decided to flip a new worm for a few casts. Most of you who know me would never guess I would try this. It was a fatty 6" Watermelon/Red Flake someone had given me. Now the FUN begins.

First off this all happened because I made a bet with Matt (Bassmatter) on who would catch the biggest fish this year. After flipping this big old worm a few times to no avail, it was time to head in. Figured I would flip it out there and let it sit while I put everything away. Put my rod in the holder and started cleaning things up. Half way through putting things away, I glance over at my rod, and the line is straight. Figured it just got snagged in a tree, and went back to putting things away. Glance over again, and hey, my line is now moving. Picked up the rod and discover there is a really nice fish on. After a really good battle, I land him and dang this is a BIG one, bigger than any Matt has landed so far! Our rule for the bet is a pic with the scale attached and readable. So I weigh it and it is exactly 5.0lb. I have a little bracket that I set the phone on for pics. Problem, I had put it away (still holding fish). I finally get it back out, now where did I put the phone? Finally find it and it if OFF (still holding fish). Finally get it on and have to sign in, but I can't see diddly because of the glare. I am now trying to set up the phone for a pic with the fish and scale. Still can't see diddly, and still holding the fish, and don't want it to die. No problem, just put the fish in the well and turn the water on (have not used it in about three years). I end up unscrewing the flow tube instead of the plug. Screw it, back to taking some kind of "Authenticated" photo. (Still holding fish). Decide to put the fish in the water for a minute to make sure it is O.K. Finally, lay the fish down by the scale and hope for the best. Meanwhile, I have drifted right up against the shore. Not a great picture of the fish, but hey the fish survived
So the day started out a normal beautiful day with... (show quote)

Nice day and a 5 pounder to finish the day was worth it. 5 lb bass is my largest and caught it on a live shiner at el cap. Your DD is coming in the future! I’ll email you about next week on the bay.
