Where? Senior Citizen (if ok), type of fishing, boat, the normal stuff to get started. There are a bunch of us here from AZ though not too vocal…

Hey, I’m not against the res (lived on one for 3 years). There’s some fine fly fishing, and lure lakes too. Use to prefer RESERVATION Lk to Big Lk (off res). On a map find Big Lk and look a little west and down a bit (is on the res ). The tribe kept a beautiful C.G. Complete with fire wood (probably not now) clean, and they were always around to talk fishing and hiking, etc. Dont know how Sunrise is doing (easy to get to) as in the olden days there was damn probs and it was empty (had to have been fixed by now). There’s also Sunrise Lk (off the 273 - res) which has good fishing and is easy to get to. All these lakes have boat access (if you’ve got one - I’d suggest it though all can be fished from the bank). Spent many a great day at all of them (way back then!).

Bass: try Willow Springs Lk (E side of the rim a mile or so beyond Woods Canyon Lk turn ( is good for trout)). Fools Hollow (in ShowLow, also for trout and walleye), ShowLow Lk , actually in Pine Top (bass, Trout, some walleye). Others: Upper Lk Mary out of Flagstaff (bass, trout, walleye maybe pike) and Amherst Lk (look for turn off to Upper Lk Mary good for trout, pike). All of these have camp grounds if you’re into that. There are some trout lakes around Willams (have to check map on that as I’ve never gone there). These are just a few, popular places. The Res is great, but don’t go there due to the multiple licenses, and distance for me. Might also want to check out the Greer area. Haven’t been up there since my mid 20’s (now knocking on 80!), buy it’s beautiful country for lake, and stream fishing. Where ever you choose, have a great time….

What species are you looking for (bass, trout, walleye, pike, etc)? N AZ has all of these…

Was there Thur. and is probably down a couple of feet more than when you were there. Both ramps in the water (if water goes down much more, the North ramp will probably close - it’s close to now). Fishing was sporadic. Very early AM or evening or nite are the best bets.

Unless you’re a die-hard fisherman who likes 4-wheeling to water for his kayak you might want to think this over! The road in (unless recently graded done once or twice a year) is difficult due to all the washouts and erosion (especially during the monsoon season). Fishing is not great due to the draw-downs, past damn problems, and purpose to help control water levels at Bartlett Lk (just down stream). Might want to check out Bartlett, also extremely low, but paved access, decent ramps, and good fishing.

If you mean NE Az, maybe ShowLow (Fools Hollow, ShowLow Lk, Willow Springs-a top the rim, Big Lk and reservation lakes). The first three have bass and Trout, the others mainly trout. All have camping areas, some elect., but all nice. That’s nice and cool, but with the monsoon in swing expect some afternoon showers…

That’s why AZ fishermen go out before the ‘cock crows’ or well into the nite! Get outa the chair and have some fun - but make sure ya have plenty of water!

If you’re talking ‘inPhx’, take a look at the AZ Fame and Fish Dept’s Community Fishing Program. Lotsa ponds in Phx and surrounding area which are stocked with cats and trout throughout the year.

Boats are for rent there. Fish for them pretty much as for large mouths (both there). Some say spinners like the old LP Spinner work well. I’ve caught them on just about everything fishing for lg mouths…

Don’t know where you reside, but if stripers are your thing, try Pleasant near Phx. When they put the new dam in they weren’t supposed to get into the lake from the Central AZ Project - sure! Nice camping areas, again if that’s your thing?

There’s always Saguaro and Bartlett in the Phoenix area. Was at bBartlett a couple of times recently and did well on bass. Alamo (north out of Wenden on the 60) for bass and crappy. Just got back from there doing well on bass. Problem is that they just chip-sealed the whole place. You’ll get the stuff all over everything! Was at Roosevelt a while back, and again did well on bass (others were doing pretty good on crappy). It’s getting pretty hot now and nite fishing on all these lakes becomes popular (out of necessity!). Hope this gives you some other options…

If in Phx proper look at Pleasant and Bartlett. If the East Valley look at Saguaro or possibly Canyon. Most of these you’ll probably want a boat. If you just want somewhere close you can walk and fish look into the Community Fishing Program (www.azgfd.gov). There are a bunch of community lakes/ponds all over the valley that stock cats all summer, and trout in the cold months. The C F Guidebook (all the places with info on each) may be available where you get your license. Hope this helps. Good luck…

Don’t know about walleyes -never caught one there. Shore fishing (unless you want to go 4-wheeling) is somewhat limited. Around the ramps, and going past them (end of the road) is a possibility. Also go to Butcher Jones cove (think the turn off to it is before the main entrance?) and take the trail(?) going out and around on the left side looking for spots (I’ve never done this - always go in a boat) but have seen others there. There is an area in the back end of the lake (tables, John, docks - might be called Bailey Flats) that I think you can get to (have to look at a map or ask someone) which would be good - if you can get there. I’ve seen folks catch there. You might have better luck at Canyon Lk. I’ve caught Walleye there, and shore fishing is pretty good there too. I hope this may be of some help…
