I launch at the following:
Emeryville(free)- 1 ramp, a little shallow at low tide and a charter boat is usually in the way if he doesn’t go out- I launch here if fishing South Bay - it’s an open parking lot and subject to theft, no washdown or fish cleaning station
Berkeley: $17- 2 ramps, washdown area, fish cleaning table, I launch here when fishing central bay and live bait becomes available, you’re behind a locked gate so it’s a little more protected.
Richmond: $17- 4 ramps, nice washdown area, I launch here when fishing North bay.
I troll using a drop spreader with a flasher, hoochie and frozen herring on a trap rig. When live bait becomes available at J&P I switch over.
We are camping at Albion this weekend to attend a crab feed today. Decided to bring my boat and try for near shore rock fish. I didn’t know you can only get in and out of boat launch at high tide this time of year so the fishing time was limited to a few hours. I ended up catching 6 lingcod, 4 were undersized at 20”, 2 were keepers, the largest being a 28” Blue. My buddy caught a Cabezon and black rock fish. My other buddy spent most of the day hung up on the bottom and loosing gear. The water was rough and drift was fast so it was hard to stay on bottom without getting snagged. It’s now raining and crab feed is outside today, should be an adventure.
That’s a nice day of fishing, thanks for sharing
Good story and memories to share years from now.
He had the drag pretty tight, he said he didn’t know how old the braid was. I assume weak point in the line somewhere. He respolled and hooked a large bat ray yesterday and brought in with no issues.
Interesting the lone anchovy caught fish vs the hoochie and flasher, might have to give it a try. Thanks for the info!
Good job, 2 is better than a skunk
Launched from Berkeley, fished around Oakland airport and Bay farm
Went out to try for Halibut after hearing reports of good fishing. Trolled frozen herring, caught 2 at incoming tide and 1 late afternoon. Fish were 24-26”. Buddy broke his 25# braid on something large, he fought it for a few minutes but we never saw what it was. He is respooling with larger line since there is a possibility of large fish in the bay. Overall good day and nice weather.
Sounds like a good fight on the Sturgeon
Nice fish, thanks for the report
