Nice crabs. Did you use a hoop net or a snare? And you were at Doran Beach? Whereabouts at Doran?

Spud Point, near the small marina where they have a few restaurants. There is a pier there. It's on the road that passes the campground/boat ramp on the way to the headlands.

I'm heading to Bodega Bay to (hopefully) get some Dungeness, Rock and Blue crabs from off the pier. Anyone having any luck Ofc the pier? I hear box traps are out and it's only hoop nets and snares. Any pointers for a newby?

And if the crabbing does not pan out, I'll fish. I understand the best area is at the end of the road before you go up to the headlands. Where do you fish? Thanks.

At what point did you start your 5 mile hike along the American River.
I’m looking for a good fishing spot to fish for trout, since that’s all I enjoy (only been in the Folsom area 1 1/2 years and really would love to do some trout fishing.
Any info I would appreciate it.
5 miles might be a bit for this 73 yr., old U. S. Marine Vietnam Veteran to tackle.

I sent you a private message. Please respond to it. If for some reason you don’t receive it put another comment on here.

If that was directed at me, yes I do. I just retired the first of last month and I'm adjusting to that, plus I'm sort of in recovery from a real bad back, so I'm kind of adjusting myself to my new situation and testing my physical limits. I've spent a good part of this year trying to find places that can be productive yet still fairly accessible to an ol buy who don't get around like he used to. I've got a few favorite spots. Collins Lake, Natoma which I told you about, Stumpy Meadows, I still like the American River with Rucky Chucky being pretty high on the list. I fish for trout. And I get over to the coast as often as I can to surf fish mostly for surf perch.

Watch out for those hellgrammites, they'll take a chunk out of a finger, be careful.

Yep, that was directed to you. I see we’re almost neighbors. And we’re both adjusting to retirement. It’s been 2 years for me so I’m well along in the process. And it’s great! Everyday is Saturday.

We may run into one another on the water some day.

Work all the time for trout, cast above and let bait float down to the trout.

Here’s a better picture to show you the deeper area relative to the fast water.

This stretch is a deeper and lazier part of the river. Very little movement noticeable.

Use a small screen at your feet in shallow fast water turn rocks over and to loosen the bugs hope for a Hellgrammite. With a split shot cast into riffle upstream of the large hole let it drift into the hole . Be prepared if presented right you will hook the largest fish in the hole.

I just and Googled a hellgramite and got an education. Never heard the name before. But it sound exciting and I’ll definitely plan to do this. I guess you hook them in the collar tight behind the head?? Is that what you find works?

Will this work in the still water of a deep pool (let the bait float down to the trout) or are you referring to casting the worm upstream and letting it float down with the current?

I ask because this river has a lot of current and small rapids. However, where I noticed the rainbows was in a couple of the pools that looked to be about 20+ foot deep. There wasn’t any current near the pools. These are just deep holes away from any swift moving water. I can perch on the rocks above and just drop in the bait but I can’t let it ride down with the current in this particular place.

The frog sounds like it would be worth a try, but make sure you check the regs - California can be real particular about live bait and where and when you can use it. And barbed hooks - some water is restricted to barbless only. I don't think that's true of the American, but it never hurts to check and make sure. In fact the American over by Coloma is open in the winter if you use barbless and artificial only.
The black with the gold blade has always performed for me. They all work, just pick one and think positive.

Ok. I appreciate that. Upon seeing those fat fish swimming around those pools I jumped right to planning my attack and deciding what bait to use. I guess I should have thought about checking to see what’s legal and what isn’t. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ll be plotting my attack and I’ll be sure to post results.

Do you still get out and fish a little? Where abouts do you fish and for what?

Very true in Oregon. They are very citation oriented.

This area is very active with hikers, but I saw no fishermen or evidence of fishing, so changes of a game warden are slim. But I still want to be above board do I’ll check the legalities and stay within them.

I appreciate everyone that weighed in.

I’ve always had and still have great luck on rainbows with the one with a yellow body and red dots with a silver or gold blade. They work great for bull trout and cut throat for me as well.

Got it! I’ll give one a try. Thx
