Number 22 zebra midges with gold copper or nickel bead heads are my go to in nov. dec. and jan in our local ponds stocked with rainbows,you can catch trout,bluegill,redear small bass all winter. After the zebras my next fav is number 18 pheasant tail nymph.Just cuz its small doesnt mean it wont catch good fish

Also if possible go out ahead of time test the waters see if the fish are biting,and then leave with the kids while the fish are still biting. It helps them look forward to going again. I generally started my kids at the local lake when the crappie were on the banks in spring. We could go catch a limit of 30 in about an hour and when we left the fish were still very active and as such my kids always looked forward to go back because it was fun. Hope this helps

I got started down this dark path in the early 1980s,equipment then was not anywhere advanced as now. With that being said k.i.s.s. keep it simple stupid lol I laugh at my own antics a lot. But a helpful tool I used learning to cast was 6 or 8 paper plates laid out in different spots in the yard in a half circle and I would practice casting a small piece of yarn tied to my leader. This allowed me to cast different distance to different locations to improve accuracy and distance control with the breeze being different as I worked back and forth arround the half circle.
