I live in Ventura county and fish from shore. I have had the best luck at Lake Cachuma. I have caught rainbows on Powerbait and small mouth bass on robo worms (near sunrise and sunset especially); also I have brought home the occasional pan-worthy Bluegill. All of these were close to shore because there is a rapid drop-off in places. Lake Casitas is picturesque, and closer to me, but I often get skunked there and at current water levels there are fewer access points from shore than before. If you are a boat-with-fish-radar type of angler, you may have luck at both places. Expect rain to have distributed lure-snagging debris along the shore at both places. As a kid, I caught limits of Bluegill at Puddingstone, but have no current intel concerning it. Henshaw was crappie, but again, I have tried nothing there recently. Castaic has some big bass, and the dam is a popular place to concentrate one's efforts (try drop-shotting to deal with the underwater grass). Best, Onslow
Ps. What is the most humane way to kill a pan fish? I've heard many theories and techniques suggested.
Thanks. I don't fish very often and have had none too small to keep and eat, but point taken
8am facing east from shore where it drops off. Single treble hook with bait keeper spring. Trout powerbait on light tackle and slim fixed bobber. In close. Boom! 17inches at 5.5 lbs rainbow. Biggest shore catch of my life.
Have not been for awhile to Piru. After this rain I assume one can launch. I encountered jet skiers before and have not been back in months.
Cachuma is 20 minutes from Santa Barbara California, enroute to the Chumash Casino and Solvang (Hwy 154). I fish boatless for any pan fish that will bite, generally in Ventura County California and surrounds: Cachuma, Casistas, Castaic, Piru. That water levels are very low; old favorite spots disappear, new ones emerge. I've had most of my luck on slip bobber arrangements and various plastic baits. At Cachuma, some bass are biting in very close to shore, so don't give up until the bait is out of the water. Also, Carp fisherman have done quite well.
Not everyone got bites from shore, but several did catch nice looking trout between the boat launch and Jack Rabbit Flats. It was today, Saturday, and it was crowded. Best, Onslow
