Normally it’s near where the river comes in, but each lake has its own peculiarities based primarily on the available habitat. The best source of information is the FWP fisheries biologist. Call and talk to that person! It’s ok to do, they work for you!
Peak season is usually post-spawn in June. But you could likely catch some prespawners right now, males especially.
Find some backwaters on the Flathead River and throw a spinnerbait!
You’re right, I’m wrong. I reviewed my pics and it was at Fort Peck where we caught the salmon last October. These trips all kinda run together in my old brain.
With a boat, you should have no problem catching walleye and other species there. A slow death hook with a worm attached 2-3 feet behind a bottom bouncer will do it. A bright bead ahead of the hook improves this setup. There’s also chinook salmon that can be snagged. Talk to your local bait shop. You’re lucky to be able to fish such a fine lake!!
There’s a decent boat launch below Dixon, just outside the Reservation boundary. I have fished the area for forty years both boat and shore fishing. It was once excellent pike fishing, fishing from shore produced decent sized pike, five to ten pounders. Some years back, the river froze over solid in most areas. This resulted in wiping out the larger vegetation in the river, and the pike haven’t done well since. Strange! But the smallies are doing fine, with lots of smaller ones about. It’s a different river nowadays, at least on the lower section,
I haven’t looked at the lake yet. I don’t know of any smallmouth fishing on the lower lake. I would like to find some. I do fish for largemouths And the perch bite happens late April normally. But this is not a normal year, so we’ll see!
Fished from shore near boat launch just below the reservation line. Once was a terrific pike fishing spot but not anymore. Things change!
Smallmouths, largemouths and pike are in Flathead Lake also.
Spent Monday fishing for smallies and pike using a variety of lures and bait and didn’t get a single bite! Clouds had moved in and maybe the pressure change did that.
It would be cool to learn your drop shot methods, i.e., gear, setup, bait, and technique. You obviously are the master of that! Thanks.
Thanks. I’ll try it soon.
Cool to see you in action again! If I put in at Polson, can I catch these in the river section or the lower west shore? Excited about fishing again!!
