My two cents. Depends on depth of target fish. At 2-4ft stream and Brookies in the balance, I’d go about 18-12” depending on visibility with 1-2 pound test tied directly to 6 lb. main line.

Fishing in bigger water with heavy tide, I’ll use a heavier transition and longer lead. And, then all points in between. As a general rule, I get disgusted with myself if my leader passes the tip eyelet of the rod when securing the rig to the outfit. Ideally that hook catch is other than an eyelet, best if at or near the base of the rod. But that’s another discussion I suppose.

Spell check sucks!

I agree, but want to add a thought about the main line and the leader being the same strength. Don’t we want the leader to be weaker than the main line so the leader breaks in the event of a hangup? For example, if I use 20# braid as the main line, don’t I want to use a 10# or less fluoro or mono leader?

I see your point. Makes me think when I was about 16, I was through in a hula popper with my fly real when a large pike snatched it. One of the more exciting 1.2 seconds of my life other than senior prom.

I have often went after puke with 10lb main line and a steel leader, worm harness, and a shiner. Worked well. Honestly I have no idea the lb test of steel leader. I think that goes by dia. Liking at targeting snake head and shark, something I haven’t done.

I concur with Fred. These are the three main configurations for line-leader combinations. The fourth configuration is tying the main line directly to the terminal tackle (eg. a snap or swivel) or directly to the lure.

Alright. Other than the 4th main line scenario, it might be said, anything tied to the main line stands some chance of retrieval as opposed to leader attachments i.e. snapped lines whatever the cause??? Outside of a major cluster &)@“; would we have agreement?

There may be three main line to leader line configurations?
A) Heavier test main and lighter more invisible leader.
B) Equal test Main and Leader with two different line types.
C) Main line is the angling challenge variable and the leader is more bit durable (Northern Pike comes to mind)

Are these three scenarios mostly true?

Are there any exceptions, rules, thoughts to incorporate.

Feedback appreciated

I find I don’t need to know or possibly care if civilians know about my USMC life. If conversing with an unknown long enough, a tell usually will show up and I’ll simply ask. One thing is for sure, this fat body these days isn’t dropping a dime on me. It’s amazing what 40 soft years can do.

Ended up referring to my wife’s dog as a Muppet Dog! I’ve had an Overhead Retriever that chased planes. Had a Southern Porch Dog that would not chase anything.,

My guess is a Labrahuahue. Does he chase himself?

Use your fishing buddy’s knife or one from the kitchen. Seriously and if in the field, keep a few towelettes in with your gear and a few alcohol pads in a Med kit. Just don’t clean anything you're tossing at in the water, and rinse your hands.

Hello all:

Grew up on NJ shore fishing, crabbing, and claiming my brains out until 13. Moved to NE PA where I fishiing mountain streams, lakes, and ponds often with my old town. Then the contamination of reality hit hard (work, marriage, kids, etc) but no regrets.

I’m moving possibly to MD Eastern shore or Delaware. Looking forward to rediscovery and a new boat. Still have the ‘74 Oltonar Old Town. Who knows, maybe I’ll use that as well. Much to learn in future digs

Cheers
