A friend and I are headed down to the Florida keys this weekend just to get some fishing in. We are from the Carolinas and have been fishing our entire lives, so we know the fundamentals. I’d just like some advice from anyone who’s road tripped down. We are bringing a canoe instead of our boat because we want to keep it simple. Bringing our nets hoping to find bait. We want to hit 7mile bridge and other than that we are gonna fly wild. Few questions: Is bait around in Florida? (Shrimp pogies etc) Are there places you’d recommend hitting from the bank? We are going to hit some freshwater to catch peacock bass and a few more fish. This is a bucket list trip. Any advice is welcome and much appreciated!

Family and I spent a 4 day weekend in Marathon last month. The cottages we stayed in were across from the beginning of one of the bridges. ( very convenient) We spent our time fishing off the pedestrian bridge that ran parallel to Route #1. We used frozen shrimp for bait. We caught a number of Bonnet Head Sharks, Crevalle Jacks, Spanish Mackerel, Puffer Fish, Lady Fish, and Needle Fish. Some of the other fisherman were using live shrimp for bait and seemed to do much better. Most of the fish seemed to either have a good set of teeth or could poison you so read up on the fish. Also check out You Tube videos. I am anxious to get back there at least one more time this winter before I head back to NH. Good luck and enjoy! 🎣🌴
