If you're going in May, you should have an array of fish biting. Not as good as the fall but still pretty good. If it's later in May you should do real well. Whiting, blues, and spanish for sure. If you haven't seen it, google "straw fishing apache pier" and watch the fellow that catches everything with just cut up drinking straws for bait.

I was there last Thursday and Friday. Fished from the surf, bottom rigs with fresh shrimp and mullet I froze last fall. Not a bite. I hope you have a better result. I saw birds dive bombing for bait off shore but it was way too far out to get a line. I've been watching the pier cams and the only thing I've seen caught was off the end of the pier so they're probably too deep to catch from shore. But a little warm weather can change all that.

I agree with the mullet. Too bad you aren't there in the fall, you can catch all the live mullet you want. I'm a surf fisherman primarily but if I was going to Surf City I'd try the pier there as well. Of all the piers on the Carolina coasts it is one of the best for yielding fish. They also have the best webcam on their pier.

I'll jump in since I just bought one. I was looking for something that was truly waterproof, not water resistant and found one from Mustad that was highly regarded. I pull a fishing cart onto the beach to surf fish and got it dumped by a wave this year and much of the stuff in my tackle box was ruined by the end of the day. This bag is really big so if you're wanting to wear it all day it may get heavy. But it was just what I needed to keep everything from rusting in saltwater. It's a Mustad MB010, UPC number 023534069015 if you are interested.

I have the Honor XT (red) and the Spartan (blue) spinning reels, both in size 5000. They are smooth on the retrieve and cast really well. I lost the screw that holds the handle one night fishing for whiting on the surf and contacted the company. They sent me a new reel at no expense, then I got the part I needed for the other about 4 weeks later. So needless to say, I've had a good experience. I wish they made something bigger.
