I don't know that much about it myself but I do know that fishing drones can carry a line and set it down where every you want. They also have really high powered cameras so in clear water, you can actually see the fish if they are not too deep and then send your line to that location. Some of the cameras have filters so you can cut down on the glare of the water and see the fish better. I was just wondering if anyone here has tried it. I will probably get one in a few months and will let you know how it works. The camera takes pictures and videos. I will put them on here if it works.

Thanks for the tips. Sorry about the geology issues. The lake we fish in does have muskys but for some reason my family just goes for the pikes. I'll have to talk to them about it.
Take care

The above pictures are my family fishing for Pike on Lake Shagawa just north of Ely (pronounced EE-Lee) Minnesota. I have only gone once with them but hope to go again at the end of September. I fly from Houston, Tx. to Chicago where my family lives and then drive all night to Ely. It's a guy thing and we leave our wives at home. We use small motor boats but canoeing is prevalent in this area. We use about 6" chubs purchased in town. There are Loons (birds) there that like to dive down to get your bait. Last year, thankfully, we didn't hook any of them. There are eagles that we have seen from a distance. It truly is a fisherman's paradise.

I am a petroleum geologist in Houston so I am interested in the geology there. The glacial debris is mostly eroded off and what is exposed at the surface is Ely greenstone. It is igneous rock that has been put under a lot of heat and pressure making it a metamorphic rock which is about 2.6 billion years old. The many lakes in Minnesota are due to glaciation that consisted of glaciers that were almost 3 miles thick about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. They scraped the surface and when they melted, left gouges that filled with water making the lakes.

Hi guys.
I am flying to Chicago where my relatives live and then drive to Minnesota. The lake we go to is right next to the town of Ely and we use my relative's small motor boats that work well there. I have gone there only last year but some of my relatives have been going there for years. They have rented a cabin already. Does anyone know if this is the best lake to go to? Should i worry about tides on such a small lake? We will be going there at the end of September just before the cold weather hits.
Thanks for the replies.

Hi my name is Dwaine. I live near Houston, Tx but have started making family fishing trips to northern Minnesota at lake Ely. Are there any tips out there for fishing in the northern lakes?

We go fishing in the Gulf of Mexico in the area of Bolivar peninsula occasionally. I have two sons who have made it an annual affair to go to Roll Over Pass on father's day with me. Fishing at that time there is not very good but the crabbing is very good. So that is what we do but still put a line or two in the water. Surf fishing is popular and we sometimes catch a good catfish or two. I understand that in surf fishing, understanding the tides is extremely important but we haven't experienced that yet.

Glad to be part of this group. Good luck to all of you.
Dwaine
