FISH FAST AFTER THE SPAWN....

Northland Pro Brad Hawthorne capitalizes on the early summer walleye and smallmouth bite.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (June 8, 2021) ā€“ The feed bags are onā€¦ Walleye spawning season has ended, and fish are in beast mode.

And, for the most part, smallmouth bass are wrapping up, and either are, or will be in a similar feeding frenzy.

As youā€™ll see in this video, Northland pro and professional guide Brad Hawthorne has the luxury of pursuing both on the same body of water, Minnesotaā€™s Lake Mille Lacs.

Improving prospects, these species frequently inhabit the same climes: shoreline rock, shallow reefs and hard-bottomed zones with blended vegetation and rocks or gravel.

Their desired depths (under 10-feet), temperature ranges (low to mid 60ā€™s) and preferred structure are identical. With all of this in mind, Hawthorne rips from spot to spot, plucking active fish.

Fishing this fast for aggressive quarry necessitates a bait that caters to early summerā€™s speed of life. To that, Hawthorne ties on a Northland Rippinā€™ Minnow.

The high-speed lure combines a perfectly sculpted, winged jig-head with baitfish profiled soft body.

Mixing and matching colors to ultimately uncover the perfect pattern, Hawthorne rips and glides the bite, triggering savage strikes from post-spawn feeders.

He also notes that because of the lureā€™s upright single hook, most snags are left on the bottom while the bait swims free.

Whether youā€™re pinpointing smallmouth bass or walleyes, or both, youā€™ll want to add Northland Rippinā€™ Minnows to your summertime bag of tricks.

Early Summer Walleye & Smallmouth Tactics (Post Spawn)

Brad Hawthorne offers some helpful advice for finding and catching early summer walleyes and smallmouth bass during the post-spawn period, as they dump out into deeper water with water temperatures on the rise.

With a unique glide and dart action walleyes canā€™t resist, this soft-bodied jig bait triggers high-velocity pursuit.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (June 1, 2021) ā€“

Walleye season is in full swing as late spring transitions to early summer.

That means itā€™s time to hit it hard before the bite settles into a slower, hot-weather pattern.

One way to score big right now is by triggering reaction strikes with rip jigging, a technique for which Northland Fishing Tackleā€™s Rippinā€™ Minnow was specifically designed.

Combining the trademark dart-and-circle action of Northlandā€™s popular Puppet Minnow hard-water bait with the allure of a baitfish-shaped soft-plastic body, the Rippinā€™ Minnow features a gliding jig head that propels it in a darting motion walleyes just canā€™t resist.

Its pre-rigged, soft and chewy body acts and feels like the real deal as it works throughout the water column to spark high-velocity pursuit and vicious strikes from the kind of walleyes youā€™ll want to photograph or ice.

Veteran guide Brian ā€œBroā€ Brosdahl knows the value of the Rippinā€™ Minnow.

In fact, the renowned walleye expert counts on it to connect his clients with all the walleyes they can handle.

ā€œEven though this lure is designed specifically for ripping through the water, itā€™s very versatile and works great for casting and retrieving along with a variety of other jigging presentations,ā€

Bro says. ā€œDepending on how you fish it, you can cover a lot of water quickly or jig vertically with pinpoint precision and a lifelike presentation.

With just about any retrieve, you can make it dart erratically and then glide. A regular jig just kind of goes up and down as you work it.

The Rippinā€™ Minnow, by comparison, sails forward, creating a fleeing action that really riles up the fish.ā€

Moonlight;

Smelt;

One of Broā€™s favorite ways to catch big walleyes is to deep bomb 15- to 30-foot depths with a ripping retrieve with a Ā¼-ounce Rippinā€™ Minnow.

ā€œCast out and let that lure hit the bottom, then instantly use a big upward sweeping motion to really work that thing,ā€ he explains.

ā€œIā€™ll point my rod tip at the lure and sweep it up over my head.

As the lure drops back down, I keep the rod tip pointed right at it and take up most of the slack because a ton of hits come on the drop, and you have to be ready to set the hook on the slightest bump.ā€

Another way Brosdahl works the Rippinā€™ Minnow is with a submergent walk-the-dog retrieve.

ā€œLet the bait sink to the appropriate depth,ā€ he suggests, ā€œthen snap your rod tip left and right, again and again, as you keep reeling.

Get a good rhythm going with this retrieve when water temperatures are around 70 degrees and the walleye will just about rip the rod out of your hands.ā€

While spring and early summer often see walleyes respond best to snappy retrieves, as the waters continue to warm, subtle jigging motions are sometimes needed to provoke more strikes.

For this, Brosdahl recommends gliding the lure with long, smooth rod lifts.

If you find the fish are following without striking, add a little twitch now and then.

ā€œThat causes the Rippinā€™ Minnow to suddenly dart and glide away,ā€ notes Brosdahl.

ā€œA big walleyeā€™s not going to let that happen, especially with that soft body and thin tail flipping around as the lure takes off.ā€

Firetiger;

Walleye;

Because the Rippinā€™ Minnow is lightweight and glides easily through the water, Brosdahl likes to use it with relatively light tackle.

His favorite outfit for late spring and early summer walleye action is a 6ā€™ 8ā€, medium power St. Croix Legend Elite spinning rod with an extra-fast tip (#ES68MXF).

Heā€™ll pair this with a Daiwa Tatula 2000 reel spooled with 10-pound test Sunline SX1 green braid.

If the water is gin clear, heā€™ll also add a 3-foot fluorocarbon leader.

ā€œIn addition to walleyes, the Rippinā€™ Minnow also wakes up smallmouth bass,ā€ adds Brosdahl.

ā€œWhen those bronzebacks get stubborn and tuck themselves into the rocks, you can bounce it off the bottom to trigger solid strikes. Everything seems to hit it, actually.

Jumbo perch jump all over it and lake trout love the bigger sizes.

White works great as a search bait color, and Iā€™ve had a lot of luck with the glo pink, parrot and natural patterns, too.ā€

Rippinā€™ Minnows come packaged with one pre-rigged bait and two additional bodies for $7.99. Available in 3/16, Ā¼, 5/16 and Ā½ ounce versions, 12 tested colors assure anglers can easily match local baitfish species and adjust for water clarity.

SLOW ROLL, BURN OR HELICOPTER...

Northlandā€™s new Tandem Willow Reed-Runner is a versatile gamefish pleaser.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (July 27,2021)

Spinnerbaits are as ubiquitous to fishing as apple pie is to America.

Itā€™s unlikely youā€™ll find an anglerā€™s arsenal that doesnā€™t contain at least a handful of spinnerbaits, diehard casters brandishing multiple styles, sizes and colors, each geared for specific species and conditions.

For 2022, Northland Fishing Tackle puts a new spin on their infinitely popular Reed-RunnerĀ®, the new Tandem Willow Reed-RunnerĀ®.

The garish spinnerbait is flush with aggressive blades and long on design and component quality.

Gizzard Shad (New Series Color)

Sexy Shad (New Series Color)

Gold Shiner (Color)

The premium, yet affordable spinnerbait is predicated on dueling willow-leaf-style blades, perfectly arranged and balanced to maximize flash and turbulence in the water.

Blades are affixed with slick spinning and durable swivels.

The stout steel hairpin features a loop bend tie-eye for easy clipping with snaps and leaders, too.

The loop bend tie-eye truly separates the entire Reed-Runner series from the competition.

The Tandem Willow Reed-Runnerā€™s body is equally as distinctive.

Their weighted heads are sculpted to emulate a baitfish, its bulging bicolor eyeballs infusing added attraction.

The jig-head opens into a firmly embedded premium Ultra-Point hook, which can easily support a trailing Northland Slip-On Stingā€™r Hook to thwart short strikers.

The Tandem Willow Reed-Runnerā€™s skirt stands out as well.

Not your typical skirt, the Crazy-LegsĀ® silicone skirt is cap-wrapped, meaning the individual legs are unified into a single component.

The benefit is that if a bass or pike pulls on the skirt, you donā€™t lose individual strands.

Weā€™ve all had skirts thinned out to uselessness over time.

Not true with Northlandā€™s Crazy-Legs silicone skirt.

And beyond durability, the skirt itself is supple and pulses seductively in the water.

Cap-wrapped, single piece Crazy-LegsĀ® silicone skirt.

Virtually weed-less, the Tandem Willow Reed-Runner is deadly pulled through or atop vegetation.

To that, itā€™s a producer running amongst emergent vegetation and submerged timber as well.

Versatility abounds as well.

In cold water conditions, slowly reel the Tandem Willow Reed-Runner on a straight retrieve, letting its natural motion do the heavy lifting.

Opposingly, in warmer water, burn it in and ready for titanic strikes.

Another method is ā€œhelicopteringā€ the Tandem Willow Reed-Runner, letting the bait freefall into pockets in the weeds.

Pike and Muskie enthusiasts will appreciate how the lure trolls on an even keel while covering water.

In all instances, add a soft-plastic trailer, like a curly-tail grub or craw for even more mass and action.

The Tandem Willow Reed-Runner is available in Ā¼, 3/8 and Ā½-ounce sizes.

No lack of color options, either, as the Tandem Willow Reed-Runner is available in 15 colors to include the new Sexy Shad, Gizzard Shad and Gold Shiner. MSRP is $6.99 to $7.99 and will be available in 2022.

CRANKBAIT CHEAT SHEET ā€“ PART ONE & PART TWO...

If youā€™ve ever walked into a sporting goods store looking to buy some crankbaits, the wall of balsa, plastic, and packaging can be downright overwhelming.

Not only are there differing shapes, sizes, and colors, youā€™ve got a host of manufacturers to choose from.

Some have rattles, some donā€™t. Youā€™ve got stick-baits, shad-style baits, jointed versions and a number of bill varieties too.

It all begs the question, ā€œwhere to start?ā€ Like many good questions, the answer ā€œit depends,ā€ begets further questions on species, time of year, casting vs. trolling, and a host of other variables.

In this two-part article, weā€™ll break down these differentiators and more while exploring what could be the most effective bait of summertime for most species.

Materials;

For simplicityā€™s sake, youā€™ve really got a single fork in the road here, leading one of two ways. Balsa or some form of plastic make up almost all crankbaits on the market, and for good reason.

Balsa has some advantages, namely in its unmistakably ā€œliveā€ action given its incredible buoyancy.

Yet, balsa without some form of Heat Compression Molding (HCM) and through-wire reinforcing can be weak, causing bills to break off or baits to snap in half.

Plastic, in its own right, is very durable but has slightly less action than its balsa brethren.

However, plastic baits can be more easily molded to fit rattle chambers, different shapes, and a host of other improvements that are much more realized in a hollow-body bait.

One floats, and the other can but often sinks slowly, such that depending on the cover you may be cranking, balsa could be more useful.

Shapes;

There are some really wild shapes out there to mimic a variety of bait styles primarily.

Chief among them are relatively narrow, shad-style baits that copy a host of minnow species quite well.

From here, we get fatter, shallower running baits that often serve bass circles more readily than the walleye ones so well represented with shad-baits.

Youā€™ve also got stick baits, which are aptly-named longer varieties that can run shallow with a modest bill, or very deep with large and long bills that bring them there.

Breaking baits down into these three categories of shad, fatter baits (technical term), and stick-baits really helps in identifying where and how they may be used.

From here, there are all kinds of baits spring forth, just in lesser number with fewer use-cases.

First would be a hybrid of fatter shad style baits that has become popular in casting and trolling applications both.

Jointed baits are commonly used when a bit more wobble or action is useful in being seen.

Larger predator style offerings simply mimic larger forage too, rounding out the list of other baits out there.

Northland Rumble Shad;

Bills;

As a general rule, the larger and longer the bill configuration, the deeper the bait is designed to dive.

The converse is also true, especially if the split ring comes out of the front point of the bait, and the diving bill is below and detached from the bill itself.

These are truly shallow-running crankbaits that rarely get past 3 feet in depth.

Rounded bill designs are far more common than their square-bill counterparts, but square-bill baits have seen a surge in popularity among bass circles.

Thatā€™s because square-bill baits have a more natural tendency to bounce off of rocks, wood, and other cover without hanging up, so these baits should be considered especially when shallow cranking the heavy stuff.

Most crankbait bills are plastic of some kind, though again, the square-bill case does see some alternative plastics that resemble computer chip material more so than standard bills found on most baits.

The longest, and largest bills on big stick-baits can bring these lures down to the 30FOW region and beyond, such that bill size and length can make a big difference on the depths youā€™re covering.

The opposite is true for shallow running or ā€œstep-style billā€ crankbaits.

By putting a jog in the baitā€™s bill, you can get many of the shad or stick-baits to run one-3 feet below the surface.

Casting vs. Trolling;

As a general rule, many of the shad and stick-bait style lures are ones that can be trolled effectively.

Thatā€™s not to say they canā€™t be casted as well, but many of the smaller balsa lures can be tricky to launch given how light they are on conventional tackle.

The larger (fatter) varieties are classic casters that many bass anglers associate with working a shoreline, deep break, or other structure and cover.

While many people associate trolling with walleye fishing, and casting with bass anglers, thereā€™s quite a bit of crossover in river scenarios and elsewhere, as predators of all kinds readily eat baits that are either trolled or casted.

Deep running baits with large bills, as well as the shallow running stepped-bill varieties are almost always trolled, and nearly never casted however, with these being more one-dimensional in their use.

To get the most from each bait, itā€™s useful to understand more about their construction, shape, bill characteristics, and applications, so as to use them properly when on the water.

Really, itā€™s all about putting an enticing offering in front of the most fish at any given time, so thatā€™s what weā€™ll focus on for part two where weā€™ll tackle running depth as dive curves, some general advice for tuning, as well as some advanced trolling information.

"How To Reach Jerk Bait Depth"

Suspending models maintain their depth when paused, but theyā€™re not motionless.

A quality jerkbait will rock, tip, or roll on the pause.

These micro-moves captivate bass and stimulate hits.

Sinking jerkbaits can be counted down to probe deep water.

When paused, a sink-ing model portrays a dying baitfish, a sight few bass can resist.

Tip: For a flashy baitfish action in sunny conditions, Browning uses a silver/black or gold/black LIVETARGET Yearling

BaitBall 110. When itā€™s cloudy, he ties on the pearl/natural finish. The flash isnā€™t as dynamic, but it still delivers a good visual for bass.

Material;

Many jerkbaits today are made of durable plastic, which lets

manufacturers be creative with profiles and features like rattles and weight-transfer systems for ultra-long casts.

For example, the Rapala RipStop has a small boot-tail that gives it an

incredibly fast, hard-stopping action, before it barely lifts its head and begins a painfully slow rise.

Balsa wood models have not gone the way of the dodo bird, though.

Many pros are fanati-cal about wood minnow baits.

Woodā€™s irregular grain can create a one-of-a-kind action in a lure.

"Fluorocarbon Leader:"

In general fishing, a "Fluorocarbon Leader" is a great option when you need the benefits of "Braid and Fluorocarbon" together without the disadvantage of both.

It's a great go-to set-up for most types of fishing, Freshwater or Saltwater.

"Braided vs Mono vs Fluorocarbon Fishing Lines": what's the best combination?;

Knowing when to use Braided, Monofilament or Fluorocarbon Fishing Lines is really important.

Hereā€™s Elite Bass Angler Carl Jocumsenā€™s take on the "Pros and Cons" of each.

Fishing Lines:

Bass Angling Pro Carl Jocumsen is an expert when it comes to the different types of fishing line and how to use each one.

Understanding which type of line to choose for your new or existing fishing set-up can be a tricky process with so many different lines available.

This is a common question and sometimes the choices can be confusing regarding when and where to utilize the different types of line.

So letā€™s break it down and make the buying process a little easier.

Over this guide, weā€™ll cover Braided, Fluorocarbon and Monofilament lines, plus some general information on Leaders thatā€™s sure to help you out wherever you fish.

After reading this, youā€™ll have a good understanding of when to use each type of line along with their strengths and weaknesses.

The Best Fishing Line You Can Buy:

Learn how to choose fishing line in our expert guide.

Work out when to cast with our guide to the best fishing times.

When to use Braided fishing line fishing lines.

Braid can be great for Bass fishing near heavy cover:

Let's start with straight through Braid ā€“ which means the Braid is tied direct to the hook, lure or sinker.

The advantage of going Braid all the way is the feel, sensitivity and strength.

This is because Braid has no stretch and is made from ultra-strong, high-tech materials.

The main techniques when Bass fishing will be Flipping and Punching heavy cover, Frog Fishing and Swimming a Jig.

When fishing heavy cover, grass and mats, the Braid is going to come through the grass better and cut through when a Bass is hooked.

It gives you direct contact with the bait, you'll detect bites faster, set the hook better and get the fish out easier.

Other advantages of Braid include its low diameter enabling you to fit lots of line on the spool and you can go for a higher breaking strain main line because of this thinness when compared to "Mono Main Line".

The disadvantages are that it can be tricky for a beginner to handle and the fish can see it, so it's not good in open clear water situations.

Tying a Fluorocarbon Leader can help that, and we will get into that later on.

When To Use Fluorocarbon Fishing Line Fishing Lines:

Using a Fluorocarbon or Mono leader on the end of a spool full of Braided main line is a great idea for many reasons .

Fluorocarbon is at the opposite end of Braid when it comes to visibility and elasticity ā€“ we are using this for the stretch which will help keep hooked fish on and allow the bait to maximize its action in open water.

Most popular techniques with Fluorocarbon are Bass fishing with Crank-Baits, Jerk-Baits, "Chatter-Baits, Jigs and Swimbaits ā€“ the list goes on.

Another big advantage of Fluorocarbon is that itā€™s basically invisible when in the water, which will help produce more bites on pressured fish in clear water from any species.

This is because the Fluorocarbon is made from material that has the same refractive qualities as water, making it much harder for the fish to spot.

Itā€™s a good go-to line for when you need low visibility and a degree of stretch ā€“ this can apply to any fishing situation.

When To Use Monofilament Fishing Line:

Mono is the original line that has been used longer than most but has faded out to just a few techniques when it comes to Bass fishing.

Mono has a lot of stretch ā€“ almost too much sometimes ā€“ and that's why it is not as popular these days.

It is also "Colored" which fish can see in clear water and can stop them from hitting your bait, but it can handle a lot of abrasion compared to Braid.

Some anglers love Mono for Top-Water bass fishing as it floats and helps keep your Top-Water up and giving the right action.

It is also good for Spinnerbaits and Chatter-Baits where you want the stretch to allow them to take the bait, get the hook and not put too much pressure on your lure.

In general, Mono lines are good for when you need a lot of abrasion resistance, stretch or elasticity in the set-up, wherever you fish.

Anglers fishing light lines for lots of species use Mono main lines ā€“ itā€™s cheap and easy to handle for beginners, too.

When To Use A Fluorocarbon Leader Line:

Combos rigged with Braided main line and a Fluorocarbon leader (a length of Fluorocarbon tied to the end of the Braid) have become one of the most popular setups with anglers.

This gives you the best of both worlds; you are getting the feel and sensitivity of Braided main line, plus the invisibility and stretch from the Fluorocarbon leader.

There is a wide range of Bass fishing techniques being used with this set up and itā€™s most commonly seen on light line "Spinning Gear".

Some techniques include "Drop Shot, Shaky-Head, Small Swimbaits, Wacky Rigs and on Bait-Caster setups Flipping, Top-Water and Weed-Less Swimbaits".

In general fishing, a Fluorocarbon Leader is a great option when you need the benefits of Braid and Fluorocarbon together without the disadvantage of both.

Itā€™s a great go-to set-up for most types of fishing, Freshwater or Saltwater.

Choosing The Right Leader Knot For Fluorocarbon To Braid Fishing Line:

Tying the Fluorocarbon-to-Braid Leader Knot is the toughest part.

Weā€™ve been tying a Knot called the FG knot for over 15 years.

It's the strongest Knot out there but can be tricky to tie.

But thereā€™s a wide range of Knots that are easy to tie ā€“ check out the back-to-back Uni-Knot or the Alberto-Knot ā€“ and the best way to learn is through online tutorials.

This way you can keep watching each part until you get it right, so we suggest learning this way and eventually tying the FG Knot when youā€™re confident to do so.

How To Choose The Right Leader Length For Your Fishing Line:

Leader Lengths all vary depending on what youā€™re targeting; in Super Clear Water with light line on Spinning Tackle, we like 20ft / 6m leaders.

This keeps your Braid as far away from the fish as possible, gives you a perfect amount of stretch to keep fish on, and allows you to retie your bait many times before having to tie a new leader.

At the other end of the scale, on Bait-Caster Tackle with Heavier Braid, we tie a short 2ft / 0.6m leader and keep the knot outside of the rod tip.

This gives you a Short Shock Leader which will help produce more bites and give you some stretch to keep fish on.

The only time;

In general fishing, a "Fluorocarbon Leader" is a great option when you need the benefits of "Braid and Fluorocarbon" together without the disadvantage of both.

It's a great go-to set-up for most types of fishing, Freshwater or Saltwater.

"Braided vs Mono vs Fluorocarbon Fishing Lines": what's the best combination?;

The only time bass fishing we will tie Mono to Braid for a Leader is for Top-Water ā€“ Fluorocarbon Sinks and usually Mono Floats, so utilizing the Mono for Top-Water Bass Fishing will give your bait the perfect action it needs.

This range gives you an idea of the types of Leader Length we use when Bass Fishing, and the same general principles apply to other styles of fishing too.

A Mono Leader is useful when abrasion resistance is key but visibility isnā€™t an issue, but Fluorocarbon has obvious advantages over Mono in many regards as a Leader Material.

We hope this guide helps you decide between Braid, Mono and Fluorocarbon Lines and which ones suit your fishing set up.

There are many brands out there and we like to use "Sunline for Fluorocarbon" applications and "Power Pro Super Slick for Braid".

Good Luck Out There And Happy Fishing.

Best Baitcasting Reels for 2021;

Baitcasters are for very important for anglers who want the extra control that they cannot get with a spinning reel.

Good baitcasters can give you a lot more control and you can cast your lure exactly where it needs to go.

If you ever watch the professional fishing tournaments, the only type of reel you mostly see is a baitcaster.

In this article, I want to explore and find the best baitcasting reel for beginners and professionals.

Our current ratings for the best baitcasting reels are:

Abu Garcia Revo SX Low Profile;

KastKing Royale Legend.

Shimano Curado.

Daiwa Tatula Reels.

Abu Garcia Ambassadeur SX.

Piscifun Torrent.

Shimano Citica.

#1 ā€“ Abu Garcia Revo SX. BEST 5 STARS āļø āļøāļøāļøāļø

Abu Garcia Revo SX Low Profile Fishing Reel;

Best Overall;

Being called one of the most popular baitcasters year after year, the Revo SX has shown to impress myself with its durability and ultimate control while fishing.

I have reeled in so many bass with this fishing reel. Combined with the sturdy Vendetta rod, this combo can be sick!

Buy both the rod and reel and you will have a nice setup for years to come.

You are getting a very good combo for the money. This rod and reel is for both beginners and more advanced fisherman.

They are both super lightweight with the alloy and carbon reel coming in at only 6.6 oz.

It has 10 bearings with a 7.1:1 gear ratio and comes in both a right and left hand model.

There are multiple generations of these reel and Iā€™m amazed how they continue to reduce the weight each year.

Check out our full review of the Revo SX.

Pros;

Super lightweight at 6.6 oz.

Right and left hand models.

Very smooth cast.

Easy to use for rookies.

Cons;

Pricier than some brands, but definitely worth it.

Check Current Price;

#2 ā€“ KastKing Royale Legend;

KastKing Royale Legend GT Baitcasting Reels, New Low Profile Design Fishing Reel, Magnet Braking System, 17.6 Lbs Carbon Fiber Drag, 5+1 Shielded Stainless Steel Bearings.

Best For Beginners;

The 7.0:1 gear ratio makes the KastKing a super smooth and efficient baitcaster.

A little bit heavier than the Abu Garcia Revo SX, but you canā€™t tell the difference at 7.5 oz.

It is a much cheaper reel than others and you can definitely feel that itā€™s not made as well as others.

Plan on this one not lasting as long as other reels that are more durable.

This reel has 11+1 ball bearings and super smooth reel for pitching, flipping and more.

State of the art dual brakes make this baitcaster ready to go fishing right out of the box.

The price point makes this a good purchase.

Itā€™s an affordable reel if you are wanting to get into baitcasting like the professionals.

Definitely a good reel to get for beginners before they move to a more durable reel.

Learn more in our full review of the KastKing Royale Legend.

Pros;

Fairly lightweight at 7.5 oz.

Multiple color options.

Smooth cast.

Great for beginners.

Cons;

Not as durable as some reels.

#3 ā€“ Shimano Curado;

Shimano Curado 201 K Lefthand Baitcast Fishing Reel, CU201K;

Best For Left-Handers;

Along with the Abu Garcia reels, the Shimano Curado has been producing reels for years starting with the 100 and 200 back in 1992 and has withstood the test of time.

With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and 5 S ARB bearings, this thing is as smooth as it can get.

The ball bearings are corrosive resistant, so you will never have to worry about replacing them.

Coming in at a lightweight 7.6 ounces, this thing is super light.

Donā€™t let that fool you though, it can cast like nobodyā€™s business, even in the highest of winds!

All these features combined allows you to control this baitcaster on every aspect, minimizing the risk for a backlash.

It also comes in the LH version for all you left handed baitcaster folks.

Check out our full review of the Abu Garcia Shimano Curado.

Pros;

Lightweight at 7.6 oz.

Right and left handed options.

Smooth cast in high wind.

30 inch crank.

Cons;

More expensive than most reels.

#4 ā€“ Daiwa Tatula Baitcaster;

Daiwa Tatula 100 TWS Baitcasting Reel;

This is our first Daiwa baitcaster on the list and itā€™s a good one too.

The Tatula comes in multiple gear ratios from 5.4:1 with the highest at 8.1:1 giving it a super smooth cast and reel.

This reel is very popular and used by professional fisherman all over.

It has a max drag of 13.2 lbs and a 8 + 1 ball bearing system for ultra smooth casting just like butter.

The Tatula gives you maximum control to cast exactly where you need it.

The T-Wing System casting has given this reel a leading edge over others in its class.

The 90 mm cutout handles reduce the weight on this reel making it very light.

If you donā€™t buy the Revo or Curado, then I suggest the Tatula.

They are all three great reels and you canā€™t go wrong with either.

Pair this with the Tatula casting rod and you have a very nice baitcasting setup.

Check out our full review of the Daiwa Tatula.

Pros;

Lightweight.

9 Ball bearings.

Buttery smooth.

TWS casting system.

Cons;

Fairly expensive.

Check Current Price.

#5 ā€“ Abu Garcia Ambassadeur SX;

Abu Garcia Ambassadeur SX Baitcast Fishing Reel;

Best Round Reel.

I wanted to include at least one round baitcasting reel on the list and of course I chose the Abu Garcia.

Can you tell Iā€™m an Abu Garcia fan?

This round baitcaster comes in multiple models: 5500 and 6600.

The differences are yardage and a 14 lb and 17 lb drag.

Both models have a 5.3:1 gear ratio and 3 + 1 stainless steel ball bearings, giving this round reel one of the smoothest in its class.

It also comes in both a left and right hand model.

It is packed with performance with a very good price point.

It is a bit heavier, but it also is a larger round reel and weighs 11.3oz.

It is great for any type of fishing, but most use it as a catfish baitcasting reel.

You canā€™t go wrong with this reel.

Learn more in our Abu Garcia Ambassadeur SX review.

Pros;

Great for catfish fishing.

4 Ball bearings,

Smooth round baitcaster.

Great price.

Cons;

Users report issues with drag;

Check Current Price.

#6 ā€“ Piscifun Torrent;

Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel 5.3:1 Right Handed Bass Fishing Reel Low Profile Baitcaster;

Reliable Budget Pick.

This is one of those brands of reels that you donā€™t hear much about but continues to have solid ratings.

The high gear ratio of 7.1:1 is very enticing at the low entry price point for this reel.

It has a high grade carbon drag system making it super lightweight and durable.

The corrosion resistant ball bearings give this 5+1 system a good reason to give this reel a chance.

It should be able to handle the water and last for years without replacing.

A little bit heavier than most but not by much, its 8 oz, so you probably can not tell much difference.

The 4.33 inch extended crank makes this sleek design stand out even more and gives you the ability to handle the load of a bigger fish easily.

This reel sounds very promising and I would like to get my hands on one to try out.

You can learn even more in our full Piscifun Torrent review.

Pros;

Excellent value.

Corrosion resistant system.

Smooth casts.

Large handle.

Cons;

Some users report report backlash.

Check Current Price.

#7 ā€“ Shimano Citica;

SHIMANO Citica;

To finish off this list, weā€™re going to go with another popular reel called the Shimano Citica.

This reel has been in production for years and has withstood the test of time.

With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and only 7.4 ounces, this is a really I would really like to recommend.

It has a very nice line crank of 30 inches and 5 + 1 bearings.

It is also available in 6.3:1 as well as right and left hand models.

The price point is a bit higher, but also worth it.

Check out our full SHIMANO Citica Reel review.

Pros;

Lightweight at 7.4 ounces.

Right and left hand models.

30 inch crank.

Long history.

Cons;

Higher price point.

How to Select The Best Baitcasting Rod and Reel Combo;

Baitcaster combos are engineered differently and with different features, quality, material, length, etc.

To avoid putting a round peg in a square hole or otherwise when looking for the best baitcaster, the smartest thing to do is ((( PUT YOUR PURPOSE FIRST. )))

After then, you can search for the best baitcaster with features thatā€™ll help you achieve that.

More so, there are other important things to keep in mind.

Letā€™s take a closer look at each of them and how they might affect your angling experience.

Length;

For the purpose a baitcaster combo is built for, you should know the longer a baitcasting rod is, the better.

And for experts with skillful casting control, it gives the advantage of heavier lures and longer casting distance.

This extra length gives more ease and comfort while retrieving the big catch; just that it requires more energy to make a good throwing.

If youā€™re a beginner, a baitcaster with a shorter rod is ideal.

Theyā€™re accurate and easier to control.

The standard length of a baitcasting rod is actually between around 5 ā€“ 9 foot mark.

So, for a lighter setup, you can start from the six-point mark and graduate higher as you get more grip on fishing.

A decent length is typically based on your experience level, but whenever you are on the lookout for a baitcasting rod, you should always remember the lengthier the rod, the better the casting.

Material;

This has a significant impact on the performance of any fishing gears. Baitcaster rods are majorly manufactured from two materials; graphite and aluminum fiberglass while some are manufactured from the combination of the two materials.

Although both materials are reliable, they have major strengths and significant advantages over one another.

If you are looking for a super durable rod that can cope with severe adventure rigor, the fiberglass is tough, durable and should be the go-to option.

Graphite, on the other hand, is characterized by being lightweight and sensitive and gives the benefit of more comfort and ease but it loses value over time and may need to be replaced first.

Power;

It is normal for fish to fight back when hooked by your bait, what determines if youā€™ll reel it in or not is the amount of power your baitcaster combo has.

With a tense struggle from a big catch, a low power rod is likely to break off.

The amount of power to select when purchasing should be determined by the weight of the fish youā€™re targeting.

Power is what determines how strong your odds are against the big game.

Thereā€™s a general categorization of the fishing rod you should know and understand how they directly affect your catch:

Ultralight power: For simple tackles and very light lure.

Light power: Fairly better lure and tackle than the ultras.

Medium power: Decent power for most fin seekers with a moderate lure and tackles.

Medium/Heavy power: Adventurous anglers with bug freshwater species.

Heavy power: Massive saltwater species.

Durability;

As fishing rods are a long-term investment, you want them to have great durability, as this will guarantee theyā€™ll serve for many years.

The durability of this equipment goes hand in hand with the materials used for their manufacture, where fiberglass seems to be the winner, this due to its value for money.

In the same way, itā€™s necessary to use your rods correctly, as well as provide them with good maintenance after each use, because, even the highest-end models and better construction, and can end up breaking if you do not give them the proper care.

The activity of the rod;

You should also understand the different actions of fishing rods and what they mean.

The activity of a fishing rod determines how efficient its power is maximized through the rod blank.

From up the tip down to the butt, below is how the activity of a fishing rod can impact fishermenā€™s experience.

Quick action: A quick activity rod allows quicker hook set and high sensitivity because the highest degree of a curve occurs nearest to the tip of the rod.

Going for a quick activity rod means you are ready to sacrifice longer casting distance for greater sensitivity and faster snare sets.

Moderate action: Here, bending starts towards the middle of the rod.

This activity rod is a decent option for the majority of buyers who prefer a slightly longer casting and crank baits while fishing.

Slow action: Slow activity rods are the perfect tools for long-distance casting as they avail users all the power out of the rod.

Typically, they begin to bend further down compared to the two above and are ideal when fishing with natural bait.
