I would add "practice casting" - the most successful fisher person I ever knew could drop a spinner in between the roots of the tree stump in the river - very successful all types fish!
Get a weight & cast a few thousand times in the backyard!
Also learn multiple casting techniques even with only one type gear.
Sure beats getting hung up on an overhead branch, or getting snagged on shorebrush, etc, etc.
The better you are casting the less ruined holes on snags, etc. - the more fish you can expect to catch & the more fun it is - drop that hula popper next to the lillypads & give it a twitch!
Could you use a slip sinker with minnow on a leader & perhaps floater jig?
Sort of like what folks do below the dam around here for - whatever!
Maybe olde standby twisted insulated electrical wire?
